Need doggie adoption vibes
DH wants to wait until January to adopt another dog. I've been trolling Petfinder daily, found a local Lab rescue and another rescue that looks like it will be a great place to adopt from.
I found this beautiful girl, she sounds perfect and I know it's unrealistic but I'm hoping she won't be placed before we're ready.
Hannah
Sex: F Age: 2 years Weight: 55 lbs Breed Mix: Labrador Retriever Shed: Yes Energy Level: High House Trained?Yes Good w/ Dogs? Yes Good w/ Cats? Yes Good w/ Kids? Yes
Hannah is a two-year-old purebreed labrador retriever. True to her breed, she is a sweetheart who loves both her playtime and her people. And yes, she even knows how to retrieve! She is active but not overly hyper and is happy to spend most of her day just hanging out and following her foster mom around the house. She plays well with others at the dog park. What a glorious sight to see her run top-speed after a ball or chasing a doggie friend. Having witnessed that energy level, we'd like her to have a home where she can get regular exercise (yard, dog park, hikes, etc.). She is very social and always wants to be with someone. Because of her strength and exuberance, she would be best in a family with no small children.
She's beautiful, isn't she? She's what's called a Dudley - a yellow lab with a pinkish hue on her nose and around her eyes.
Some alternatives if she doesn't work out...
All of them are from NY Pet Rescue

Re: Need doggie adoption vibes
Wendy! They say that about a lot of Labs because of their rambunctiousness. I was worried that I kept seeing that, even though we don't have kids, we do have nieces and nephews. I thought - they're a danger to children?? Now I know why, mostly it's because they might knock them down.
The other place that I was looking at is here. They're based out of Smithtown.

Re: Need doggie adoption vibes
she is adorable!!!!!
IF she is (And I hope she is not) placed by the time you are ready - I was also working with a local lab group before I found Diesel. They had found a dog for me , an 8yr old black lab that had some MINOR seperation anxiety.
I ended up meeting Diesel first and since I fell in love with him I didnt meet Baxter (from the lab rescue) b/c I didnt want to be in a position to have to choose.
just throwing it out there. I know how hard it is to try to find a good fit for your family.
FM if you want more info.

The rescue you're talking about is the link I posted in my last post! This is the Baxter you're talking about, right?
DH works from home and I can bring my dog(s) to work so we can take on a challenge like that. We took on a personality challenge with Brinkley and I'm so very happy we did.
I was actually thinking (didn't mention this to DH yet) about fostering for the Smithtown Lab Rescue... We'll see if I can talk DH into that too.

Yes! Kim, the woman I was emailing with from the rescue said he is a really, really wonderful dog. Great temperment, personality, etc. Housebroken , trained, she went on and on. He was found wandering around somewhere so they dont know who his original owner is but the family who then adopted him cant cope with the SA anymore. But, he isnt destructive , he just paws at the last place he saw the owner or he paces. She said it was minor and she wasnt sure why they were getting rid of him.

That makes me sad, to hear that. I don't think every problem is 100% fixable, but there's a lot that can be done for a dog like that, to make life easier and more enjoyable for him.
January can't come soon enough! We're going to be moving some furniture around and to the basement this weekend which will make more room for things like a Christmas tree and ohhhhh maybe an additional dog bed!
Closer and closer...

Re: Need doggie adoption vibes
I hit the Labrador Motherlode!!!
Over 100 Labs for adoption!!!
They adopt to Long Island, and most of these dogs look like 100% Labs or very close to it. Every color, every temperament, every age. They even have adoption events you can attend to meet a bunch of dogs at the same time. They have detailed descriptions of the dogs with really helpful information too.
We could take the PJ ferry and it's 45 minutes from the Connecticut side.
I can't WAIT!! I hope this helps anyone who might be looking for one.

Re: Need doggie adoption vibes
They don't dwell on the reasons they were given up too much but so many of the other descriptions I've seen on Petfinder say things like "dog was too much to handle" and "owners moved to a place that doesn't allow dogs".
With Labs especially, I think many people fall in love with their faces and friendliness. And once the honeymoon is over and the real work becomes necessary, they don't want to put in the effort.
