In a complete puddle of tears...

RE just called to say that they just noticed my clomid start was yesterday, sorry they didnt call sooner, but my pre-cert with my insurance (for IUI) was denied... i started yesterday - now what? I questioned if we could skip the IUI part and just monitor and DH & I could just BD? They cant monitor without doing an IUI I am being told. So basically - I am at a loss of what to do... I left a message for my OB to see if he can follow me up with the meds they prescribed.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't understand how we got through these appts so far and no one bothered to check everything before setting us up with a game plan... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have no idea what to do....

You could test for ovulation with OPKs and BD.
Or... you could pay out of pocket for IUI & monitoring. It wouldn't be that expensive. Ask your RE what his cost is. I'd monitor a bit later (like CD11 or CD12).

Sorry your dealing with this. I absolutely hate insurance companies. Is it just the re you go to who won't monitor you if your not doing iui or is it that your insurance won't allow you to be monitored? My re monitors you either way. You could buy over the counter ovulation test and than time bd like that. Good Luck.

I am so sorry! I agree with the PP. My Dr charges like $230 for the IUI (not sure about the sonogram follie check). Also I only had one sonogram to check the follies on CD12 and they were ready so I only had to have one.

Ins wont pay - I also have the ovidrel they prescribed ...ugh! Am I able to do clomid WITHOUT being monitored for my follie size, etc? I am utterly beside myself - DH is upset as well...

I am more nervous bc on the consult they explained the hyperstimulation of the eggs and how we could get 4 or more to drop - since it could potentially be a higher risk of multiples... That frightens me about not having a sono to monitor....

Re: In a complete puddle of tears...

Try to relax! (I know that's easier said than done...)

An IUI cycle is actually pretty inexpensive. I know my (very expensive) doctor's office charges $500 for the full cycle (including IUI and the monitoring).

Can you talk to your dr to see how much it would be OOP?

ETA: I, personally, wouldn't use Clomid w/out being monitored. JMO!

I used a higher dose of Clomid without monitoring the 1st time.

The 2nd time & 3rd time... I was monitored.

If you are sternly against multiples...maybe get just monitored (about $200) once to see where you are at.

Re: In a complete puddle of tears...

Many women have used Clomid without monitoring, or the use of OPK's. Talk to your RE and/or OBGYN and see what they suggest or if they can work out some sort of plan for you. Were you ovulating on your own without Clomid? Also, what dose are you on. I took Clomid for 4 months and the most follies I ever got was 2, so I was never really worried about multiples but you could respond better then I did, so I would at least want a sono close to when O'ing just to know what was going on. Also, can they do a quick appeal to your ins company?? You have a good week or so before the IUI would be...

Re: In a complete puddle of tears...

Not sure why they won't monitor you without doing the IUI. I know that isn't policy at my RE's office - my best friend did it last cycle.

I would take the Clomid, monitor yourself and BD like crazy. Would skip the trigger shot though. You have nothing to lose. Unless you are making tons and tons of eggs, I wouldn't worry too much about the multiples.

(I did an IUI cycle with 12 mature follies and nada!)

Re: In a complete puddle of tears...

Thanks for all of your responses. I didn't even think to pay out of pocket. I got in touch with my regular OB and explained the situation and said if we were ok with twins (since it could happen) we don't have to worry about monitoring by sonogram. Just time out our BDing. We don't have to use OPKs and hopefully we will call him with good news.

I am calling back our RE tomorrow to discuss. My issue is that I don't ovulate. No cycles. Nothing. So this is our first month trying to ovulate. I am trying to fight it with the insurance company - I have a pituitary growth that makes my prolactin very high - hopefully that will help with getting it approved. Thanks again

This past cycle I did Clomid with an IUI, but I didn't have any monitoring. We just used the OPK's. So, if you could just pay for the IUI out of pocket, you don't have to get the monitoring also. I really hope everything works out for you this cycle!

Re: In a complete puddle of tears...

I personally think that you should try to pay OOP. You should really be monitored with clomid (especially since you don't O on your own). Most OB's for some reason think its not important. You have no idea how your body is going to react, if at all. And you don't really want to waste time. Because what happens if this month doesn't work, will you seek the RE again? You might as well go for it. Hopefully your RE has a reasonable rate and if this works the first try out it will be the best money you ever spent. Charge charge charge...get reward points and worry later how you will pay it.

You don't even want to know how much money I've spent so far. But, I am sorry I waited so long to get going, so my best advice is to do it right the first time.

Good luck!! And I am sorry your insurance wont pay. This really needs to change.

Re: In a complete puddle of tears...

I have had some issues with the insurance company too, just keep fighting with them. If your plan covers IF, then they should cover this, Good Luck
