The tree finally flowered!!! Come look...

We have this flowering tree ( I think it's a Rose of Sharon) that hasn't had many flowers in the past few years. Last year, I think it had three. DH wanted to rip it out but just never had the time. I am so happy we didn't because this year it has a hundred flowers and they are so pretty. Must have been all that rain (have to remember to water it a lot next year). The flowers have been out for about two weeks now - I just love them!

Here's the whole tree:External Image

And here's a close up of some of the flowers:

Beautiful!! Chat Icon It's definitely Rose of Sharon, which is in the Hibiscus family. I loved these as a kid, and used to call them "my trees".

I'm glad you didn't cut them down too, although they are very prolific so they can take some really hard pruning if you need to.

I have some seedlings myself and am planning on training them into some nice shrubs. Chat Icon

Really beautiful! Good thing you kept it! I bet all that rain this year helped it to bloom.

Re: The tree finally flowered!!! Come look...

we have one of those on our property and when it blooms its BEAUTIFUL but you really have to prune it. It will grow wild if you dont. I know the first year we where in the house it grew all over the place then we cut it back and keep it trimmed each year and it looks more beautiful each year

What time of year are you supposed to prune them? This one is getting big and starting to interfere with the driveway.

I think Rose of Sharons are beautiful, but watch where those flowers go...they SPREAD like no tomorrow.

If anyone wants one - I have saplings all over the place and probably 3-6 foot ones in the back of my property that has escaped me. I seriously pull 500+ saplings a year.
