Question for BF moms
when did you introduce a bottle and/or pacifier? i've heard conflicting opinions. we struggled with BF a little bit in the beginning, but now DS is 2 1/2 weeks old and BF is finally going well. i'd love to try to give him a pacifier (i've been letting him s uck on my finger in the meantime), but i don't want to mess anything up.

Re: Question for BF moms
Molly HATED all pacifers and refused them. I never saw the need for them with her. I pumped full-time (not by choice though, Molly wouldn't latch) so Molly always had a bottle. You should wait 6 weeks before introducing any other type of nipple, if you can. Just making sure that he doesn't get confused at all.

Re: Question for BF moms
when i was inthe hospital they were giving olivia the pacifier. i gave it to her when we got home it helps soothe her before bedtime and once in awhile when shes fussy. i also BF'd for 2 months now i pump and give her a bottle but she took the bottle at 3 weeks and then the breast the next feeding. i dont believe in nipple confusion. if your child is hungry they will take it from the bottle or nipple. i find it much easier to pump and feed her the bottle as i only pump twice a day instead of every three hours as if i were feeding her.

Re: Question for BF moms
The LC's at Schneiders Children's Hospital told me that nipple confusion is a myth, and giving them a pacifer early on is not an issue while breast feeding.

Re: Question for BF moms
I believe that the earlier you intruduce these things the better it is forthem.. I gave my DD a pacifier and the botttle after 2 weeks when my pediatrician said go for it. I would have thought it was too early too but he said otherwise. She had no problem with nipple confusion but I do believe it to be true for some infants. Thank goodness not mine I go back to work on Monday os Im glad there is no problems

true, and that lactation consultant is a very good friend of mine! we gave a pacifier and used a bottle ( for chammomile tea to reduce colik) from day 1 abd we never had a poblem, the feel and scent associated with BFing helps the baby to differentiate.

Re: Question for BF moms
I gave both my sons a pacifer from the time I brought them home from the hospital and I breast fed. There was never a problem. However, the first one I didn't give a bottle until 6 months and the second not until 2 months. I still didn't have any problems.

Re: Question for BF moms
same here, angela and danielle both bf, took the bottle and pacifier once in a while with no problems. Danielle is 6 1/2 weeks and nurses when I'm home, takes bottles of pumped breastmilk when I'm not, or when I am home and busy and someone else is around to give her a bottle. It's great!

Re: Question for BF moms
thanks everyone! i actually tried giving him the pacifier last night. he liked it, but it kept popping out after a minute or two and he would get all fussy about it. i think i'll try giving him the bottle next week. a friend of mine waited too long and her daughter would never take the bottle and i don't want that to happen. it would be SO nice to have someone else who could feed DS to give me a break!

Re: Question for BF moms
I have to say that Molly being given a bottle in the hospital is the reason that she stopped nursing. She didn't get confused...she knew what she wanted..the ease of the bottle. So it might be a 'myth" but it stopped my nursing relationship with my daughter.

Re: Question for BF moms
DS was cup fed a few times in the hospital and we also gave him a bottle 3-4 times. My LC gave us an orthodontic nipple and we never let him really **** on it. The LC told us to keep pulling it out of his mouth to make it difficult for him so that he would still prefer the breast. We didn't have any problems. We still haven't let him actually **** from the bottle yet though.
