IUI Q's

Hey ladies,

Even though I'm on my 3rd IUI, I still have some nagging questions. Let me know if any of you have answers to these:

1- Why are IUI's done 36 hours after the HCG shot? I've heard you can ovulate anywhere between 24-36 hours after the shot and so I would think if you ovulated in the 24 hour time frame, having the IUI at 36 hours would be too late?

2- Can IUI's work with low morphology? DH has low morph and my doc didn't think it was an issue for IUI's, but I've been reading online and it seems like the majority of couples with low morph can only get prego with IVF w/ ICSI?

Thanks!

I dont have the answer to your 2nd question but I have asked the RE your first question b/c I was confused about the timing of the hcg/IUI as well. She said that the egg is good for 24 hours after it is released. Good luck Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

See I've heard that most eggs are done after 12 hours. And isn't the point to have the sperm waiting for the egg to come out or are they worried the sperm will not survive? I would think 24 hours after the HCG would cover your bases more.

As pp said, egg has to travel, so it can take anywhere from 24-36 hrs.

Can it work, yes (just take look at that cute kid in my avatar), but with IVF w/ICSI your chances of a bfp are greater if you issues are MF.

When I got my bfp, the morphology percentage was either 1 or 2, I don't remember, but it wasn't good.

1 - You can ovulate 24-36 hours after the trigger and then the egg will still be viable for a little while. Remember, now the sperm don't have as far to travel as with normal BD...

2 - You're probably better off with IVF with ICSI for low morphology, but people do get pregnant through IUIs. How bad is his morph? The whole issue with morphology is that it makes it more difficult for the sperm to penetrate the egg, so with ICSI... they actually inject the sperm into the egg which bypasses any issues with morph. If this IUI doesn't work... I'd probably move onto IVF with ICSI - KWIM?

We're dealing with similar issues. We've been told iui can work with low morph - it just takes one, but of course icsi increases your chances of success. Good luck to you and FM if you want to talk. We're on iui#5 with injectibele.

Actually during IUI the sperm still have to swim up into the tubes to meet the egg(s). The sperm can't fertilize the egg in the uterus...so they still have to do some swimming. IUI only bypasses the cervix.

Oops!

Shiv, sorry! My point was basically that they have less distance to travel... Chat Icon
