Coffee and TTC?

Should I be cutting back on caffiene? If so, any ideas on how to do that without getting headaches?

Re: Coffee and TTC?

DH and i are not TTC yet but i figured i should cut back my coffee intake just because the last thing i want is to have m/s when i do get pregnant AND have caffeine withdrawal! i'm a HUGE coffee drinker! my usual drink is a grande latte every morning and sometimes in the afternoon. what i have done is ask them to make it 1/2 caf (1/2 decaf) so i can wean myself off. and if i have a second cup in the afternoon, i try to make it decaf. it's the best i can do for now and i haven't had any headaches b/c of it. oh, and i also found 1/2 caf coffee in stop and shop this weekend!

Re: Coffee and TTC?

I haven't cut out anything yet. With DD I didn't cut out until I got a BFP. TTC is so stressful without adding this to it, however I have read that it is a good idea to cut back on coffee, so if no BFL this month, I am adding that to the plan for next month.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Coffee and TTC?

I have been cutting back on coffee (you should also cut back on caffeinated soda, chocolate and teas-herbals are fine). You don't necessarily have to, and I don't think that caffeine is going to hinder your TTC, but I switched to decaf and herbal teas, which help. Do it slowly, add more milk, find other drinks. I love ginger and hot water-very yummy alternative. My OB made me cut back since I am a busty girl and I get bad pain in my breasts. But if you are drinking 1-2 cups a day, I don't see a problem with it. 6 cups might be another story. Just go slow because caffeine withdrawal may cause bad headaches.

Re: Coffee and TTC?

Ladies... keep in mind that during PG you are allowed to have up to 2 cups of coffee per day.

Not Starbuck's brand of course, but regular old home brewed coffee is fine!

And trust me.... there are some days during that 1st tri that you will need the coffee drastically!

I tried to be a hero, but there were days that I was just beat, and had to work.... So, I drank coffee, and all was better!

I am not trying to be mean AT ALL - but these kinds of comments bother me!

There's no way of knowing that THIS is what got you pregnant.

It's great that you chose to do those things, but there are plenty of people who do all of those things and more and it doesn't work for them.

Im sorry but I have to agree with Hayley. Nutrional restrictions are for the health of the already growing fetus, (most of the time) Meaning for ex eating too much fish is bad b/c mercury is bad for the fetus but it doesn't necessarily affect fertility. So saying that you were eating and drinking as though you were pregger is misleading to the inexperienced TTCer.

ITA-it is great that you took steps to get healthy, but a lot of people do the same and don't get pregnant.

No cutting back here. I need my cup every morning. When the time comes...if necessary, I will cut back. Until then - 1 medium coffee with milk & 2 sugars please. Chat Icon

Re: Coffee and TTC?

Well, I switched to 1/2 caffienated 1/2 decaf. Not only was it cheaper, but I got enough of the caffiene and no headache. I have wanted to cut back anyway, and am fine continuing to do 1/2 and 1/2. Thanks for the suggestions everyoneChat Icon

Re: Coffee and TTC?

I've been slowly cutting back...hope by the time I get a BFP I'll be down to zero but - with a toddler it is SO SO SO SO SO hard! I think I will miss this the most!

Also, my OB told me some caffeine is totally fine so I don't believe it is necessary to cut it out completely.
