At what point in labor...

do you plan on calling immediate family?

My mom wants to be called the second anything happens and wants to come over...I don't think it's a good idea...

What is everyone doing?

i think it really depends on how quickly your labor progresses. i called my mother and sister when we were on the way to the hospital - but that was less than an hour after my first contraction (i had a very fast labor).

We're not calling anyone until we're on our way to the hospital and I don't even want them there until the baby is born. I don't want a bunch of people (even my parents) hanging around just waiting for the baby to come out. Then again, my family can drive me bonkers....but DH and I just want it to be as low key (as delivery can be) and just the 2 of us and same for when he just comes out....we want as much alone time with him as we can before the grandparent train arrives. We'll let them know we're on our way and that we'll call them when he's here.

Yea I figured I would call her when I'm on my way to the hospital and she can come there.

I'm worried if I call her from home she will start calling me every 5 minutes...even in really early labor...

Re: At what point in labor...

I will tell my family as soon as labor starts. I don't want them to come over or anything, I just want to give them a heads up that the baby is coming. I will probably call them again on my way to the hospital and from there, just keep them updated.

Re: At what point in labor...

i'm thinking i might call my parents once i'm sure i'm REALLY in labor. they live on li and we're in brooklyn so it can take about an hour to get here and i'd like them to be at the hospital. it'd also be nice to have a ride to the hospital instead of taking a cab.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

i'm planning on just playing it by ear i guess...

his parents we'll call as soon as we're done calling mine. they're in texas so i'm not worried about being overwhelmed with visitors.

I'll probably have DH call them when I am admitted into the hospital.

Re: At what point in labor...

With my family, I'll call the very second. Chances are I'll go into labor while DH is at work. He's 45 minutes away, mom is 5 miles. My family is like that brothers and sisters show... word travels fast. They'll get the dilation progress and most likely be at the hospital when it gets close.

DH's parents, we have not yet asked them but he's pretty sure they are call us when the kid's here people. Chat Icon

Re: At what point in labor...

Other than my SIL who has to come over and watch my DD, probably no one until we are settled in.

BUT other than my Bro and SIL, my whole family is out of town so there is really no need to update them until something happens.

Re: At what point in labor...

I called my mom when labor first started because I wanted her to leave work and drive over here. We called everyone else when we got to the hospital, but I knew it wouldn't be long, i was already 8cm.

maybe you can compromise by calling her when labor starts, but asking her not to actually be there until you're at the hospital?

labor can take hours and hours, if you'd rather be by yourself with DH, i would just be honest about that even if it risks hurting her feelings a little. it is your labor after all and believe me, you want to be as comfortable as you can.

funny, my "plan" before i went into labor (and i use quotes because even the best thought out plans can go awry when labor is involved!) was to call family as soon as it started so that they grab the next flight to NC (from NY and FL). as it happened, labor was so quick that they didn't arrive until several hours after the baby was born.

Re: At what point in labor...

Well my mom is going to be in the room with DH & I, so she & my father (& therefore my siblings) will obviously know really early on. We may need DH's parents to help with DD so we may have to call them pretty early too. They won't be coming to the hospital likely until the very end or even after the baby is born. A lot depends on the time of day and where our daughter ends up.

Re: At what point in labor...

My mother also got offended when I told her to come after the baby is born...I also told her and MIL that NO ONE will be allowed in the labor and delivery room either before or after the birth and they will just be waiting in the waiting room.

I think we will call them after the baby is born and they can come afterwards.

If they get offended, they'll just have to deal with it.

I figure we won't call until we get settled at the hospital. Truthfully, we might not even call until the baby is out and we are settled.

I just don't want to be overwhelmed.

Re: At what point in labor...

Well for DS I called when we headed to the hospital after my water broke. My parents live about 1.5 hours from me. They did not see me before I gave birth to DS. I was so upset with them. So if your family lives far away then call earlier. I interrupted dinner and then they had to pick up my grandma and so they took their time to get to the hospital.

I don't want any relatives in the delivery room besides DH. As far as I am concerned DH can call them when it's all over and done with. They live close enough to the hospital that they can be there in 10 minutes.
