How soon after the baby is born can you go to a wedding?
A good friend is getting married and I'm not sure what to do....
This is my first baby...

there is not set time frame. I would see how close the due date & date of the wedding are.

If it's a local wedding, I would probably go if it's after a month or so. I'd probably have my mom watch the baby while I attend the wedding with DH. I'd just stop by and make an appearance, not expect to party long.

Ditto. Also, just go by how you feel. I'd let the bride know ahead of time that maybe you can't answer for sure but you'd love to come if you feel up to it..and when is the latest you could possibly let her know that you can/cannot attend.

I know 2 different people who attended weddings 3 weeks after giving birth (one of which had a c section!)....see how you feel after, and let the bride/groom to be now that you will be a very late RSVP!

Ditto. My SIL came to my wedding with my then 1.5 months old nephew, all the way from Virginia! She looked so exhausted, I wouldn't of mind if she couldn't make it.

My sister made it to our wedding *12 days* after she had her third baby (VB). She stayed for the whole reception too, with her DH and 2 older kiddies. I could NOT have done that, I think 3 weeks would've been the earliest I could've done it (I had a "c" though).... It's really so subjective, if you have to RSVP and it's less than a month, I'd probably decline with regret...

i could have gone to one 2 weeks after giving birth with no problems at all.
finding something to wear though would have been tough. too small for maternity, too large for regular clothes

What about attending the ceremony in Church? Is that more realistic?

i had a vaginal birth and honestly felt great right away. For my own comfort/health, I honestly feel like I could've gone as soon as I was released from the hospital. However, there is no way I could leave DD long enough to even make a short appearance. I am breastfeeding, so did not want to introduce a bottle before 4 weeks. Also, I am just so attached to her. The first time I left her was at 2.5 weeks, and it was for 1 hour and I was 2 blocks away while my parents watched her. I haven't left her for my than 2 hours (she's 5 weeks) and I haven't been more than 15 minutes away by car.

Honestly it depends on a lot of things - how close to your due date it is, how you delivered (vaginally you will more mobile earlier than with a csection), etc.
When is the wedding and when are you due?

Well I would say depending on when you go- the church is realistic (but again it depends on when you have the baby and how). If you are home from the hospital and go late you probably won't feel like going to the reception (depending on how you give birth) but you can go to the church- you can always get someone to drive you and hobble in and sit in the back.
The reception is going to be hit or miss - depending on when you deliver and how you deliver. If you go early and vaginally you will probably be more likely to make it than if you go later with a section.
As far as BFing - well they typically eat about every 2 hours - but in the beginning it can be more than that. If the baby will take a bottle and you can pump it will help but if not the reception will be harder than just the church.

Physically I would think you'd be fine, i was walking around a few hrs after I delivered (vaginally).
If you are BFing you might be able to pump enough the 2 weeks before the wedding to have someone else feed the baby while your at the wedding...and you can pump while your at the wedding for comfort.
If you just go to the reception you may get thru the 4hrs w/o pumping at all.
If you don't have enough BM stored before the wedding you could always supplement w/formula.

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable bringing a newborn out in public, especially during the winter. You could always pump beforehand and have someone give the baby a bottle while you're at the ceremony. That way, you don't have to take the baby with you. Some babies won't take a bottle or will refuse the breast after having a bottle. I haven't had that problem, but it's something you may want to consider.

2 weeks seems awfully early. I think it will totally depend on how you feel at that time. Your friend should understand.
Personally I would probably say that I won't be able to make it to the reception but will TRY to come to the ceremony.

i personally wouldn't bring a newborn to a wedding especially at only 2 weeks. i think you should tell your friend you'll wait and see and go from there.

My due date was 10/1, I ended up delivering on 9/25 and went to a wedding on 10/18. I had a c-section and felt fine at the wedding (wasn't dancing or anything) and it was nice to have a night out without the baby. I don't know if I would have felt up to it if I hadn't delivered a week early though- 2 weeks is cutting it close and I really don't think I was feeling up to it at that point.

My friend went to a wedding 3 days after she got home from the hospital. no joke. she didn't stay the whole night, but it was her Best friend. My other friend's mother had 9 children - after number 8 she left the hospital to go to her sister's wedding and then returned to the hospital after the party - this was back in the 60s. crazy. I think it depends on how you feel.
