can't find "my" black cat--UPDATE! he's inside now! UPDATE #2--he ESCAPED!!!
some background: i rescued a feral kitty last year. she's my baby. DH is allergic to cats but he's been getting allergy shots for years. he reacts well around her, but we never know when he may react.
for that reason, i haven't been able to rescue more cats
but there's a BEAUTIFUL black cat that hangs around my yard. the baby was starving when i found him--he ate cans of food at one time. ever since then, i've been feeding him twice a day. i bought him a bed, and he has an insulated pet house. i even got him to let me brush and hold him!!
DH agreed that i can take him in for halloween since he's black and i'm worried about him. i'm moving his bed, an extra litter box and his food into my spare bathroom. i was ready to take him in this afternoon....but i can't find him. he hasn't been around all day. i just hope he's okay and is having fun somewhere--but he hasn't eaten dinner yet.
i'm sick to my stomach over this. i want so badly to adopt him, but at least i know he's being fed. i will be getting him fixed soon, but right now i just want to find him.
UPDATE:
I was sick to my stomach because he didn't come by at all last night to eat dinner. he never does that. i go down this morning and he was waiting for me at the door!
i brought his bed and food in and then took him to the bathroom. he's been crying for the past 20 minutes. i feel so badly but i can't leave him out today. he's too friendly and i'm worried about kids. i just wish i could keep him. he's such a good boy. it'll break my heart to put him back out tomorrow
UPDATE #2:
so i went down this morning and he actually used the litter box! i put my other cat's poop in it so he would know what it was for. but the smell was unbearable in that small bathroom so i opened the window a crack, fed and pet him and left.
less that an hour later i went to check on him, and HE ESCAPED!!! he opened the window AND the screen--i can't believe how smart this cat is. luckily it's a first floor window so he didn't have far to jump. but now he's gone.
i half hope he doesn't come back since i know i can't take him in and it breaks my heart. but i cried when i realized he left. i really love this cat. at least i know i'll give him food, he'll have a bed and a pet house with me. so the other half of me hopes he comes back so i know he'll be taken care of.
i guess only time will tell. who knows if he'll even come near me after i kidnapped him

Re: can't find "my" black cat
Hopefully he's got a hot date I understand your concern, though--I used to have an indoor/outdoor black cat, and we were always so scared for her on Halloween.
Hope your little guy comes back so that you don't have to worry any more!! Thank you for giving him a safe place to rest his head!

Re: can't find "my" black cat--UPDATE! he's inside now!
So glad you found him! As an aside, my DH was really allergic to cats too. Now we have 3 cats, and he barely has a reaction, he has gotten used to them. He still takes a claritin everyday, but the cats are all over him, and now he is a total cat person. Is there any way you could kind of test the black kitty in the house to see how your DH would be? If he is doing well with your one cat, chances are he'd be ok with the two.

I was allergic to cats too when I got my kitty- I suffered for a few weeks and now I'm fine. Your body will build up a higher tolerance to a cat you are around a lot- it's the same effect as when you get allergy shots- they introduce the allergen into your body until you body builds a higher tolerance for it. I still get sneezy around other cats- but with mine I never get one attack anymore. Good luck!

I can vouch for this, too. I actually found out when I went away to college that my allergy to cats is off the charts. I never knew it because I had lived with cats my whole life. It was only when I was away for a year that they started to bother me.
My DH is also very allergic to cats. We got our one cat about a year and a half ago, then we took in our stray who had seven kittens. We currently have a total of 7 cats living with us (it was 10 so it's actually an improvement ) and he's been fine. He even has to change all those litterboxes because I'm pregnant.
I'm glad this little guy came back. He doesn't sound feral, though--most feral cats will never let you anywhere NEAR them, no matter how much time you've cared for them and how much you feed them.

Re: can't find "my" black cat--UPDATE! he's inside now! UPDATE #2--he ESCAPED!!!
OMG, I can't believe he escaped. Well I can...
When we had taken our female cat in years ago, she literally scratched through a basement screen window to get out...and my mom saw her inour driveway with a male cat on top of her!!!
She wound up getting pg (we hadn't gotten a chance to have her fixed yet since she was a stray we just took in) and that explained one of the litters of kittens we had to find homes for growing up.
They find ways out, the cats used to living outdoors. I know what you mean about half wanting him to come back and half not..I really do.
