Which is worse?

Situation:

I will have to trigger (take an injection of hCG) before my IUI. This injection stays in your system for a little while, meaning that if I took an HPT at 2 DPO - I would likely get a positive result, but it would just be from the tirgger. Does that make sense?

Now, keeping that in mind - which seems better to do after the IUI?

1) Taking a test every day in order to "test out" the trigger. So, once I got a BFN I would know the trigger was out of my system. If I got a BFP after that, it would mean it was a true BFP. Testing every day seems like it wouldn't be too fun - but at least I would know if I was pregnant or not before the beta (without having to wait 2 weeks).

2) Wait until my beta. This would be scheduled for 2 weeks after the IUI. This seems torturous! I feel like such anxiety and tension and excitement would be building during this time that it would be a huge letdown if I waited that entire time and then got a negative test.

Keeping all of that in mind: Please choose my poison! Help me decide which I should do.

Re: Which is worse?

In my opinion (and I have never been through anything like this so I probably shouldn't have an opinion) it seems it would be better for you if you wait for the beta. I guess then you'd be in the 2 ww just like us. I know if I tested everyday in those 2 weeks I would drive myself more crazy. As hard as it can be to wait for me its even harder for me to test and get a BFN and then still be left wondering if the test was right and if I tested to early or what if, what if, what if. Whatever you decide I am here to support you and give you lots of Chat Icon and Chat Icon

Re: Which is worse?

I think (but not positive!) that it takes 1 day for every 10 mg of HCG to leave your system - so if they give you a 100 mg shot, you need to wait until 10 days after your trigger to test. My numbers could be slightly off.

The first cycle that I triggered, I got a BFN on 12 DPO. This month, I triggered with an IUI, and I caved and tested 11 DPIUI - which was 12 days past the date that I triggered - and got a BFN.

I think that as long as you wait until at least 10 days after you triggered to test, you should be fine. To be safe, I try to wait 12 days.

I'm your other vote. I would not test every day but I would probably test right before the beta. Think of it as your own personal 2WW. You still won't officlally know untill the beta but at least it probably wouldn't be a false positive. I don't think I could take the stress of testing every day not knowing if it was a fals positive or not.

Just to clarify:

If I tested everyday... once I got a BFN - that would mean the hCG from the trigger was out of my system. AFTER that, if I got a BFP, I would know it was a true BFP. Does that make sense?

So let's pretend this is how it went:

5-9 DPO, BFP (from trigger). 10 DPO - BFN (trigger is out of my system). 11 DPO - BFN. (same) 12 DPO - BFP (REAL BFP)

I know it's confusing, right?

Re: Which is worse?

Having had many IUI's... go with choice #2

For me, there was nothing worse than seeing it blaring negative on the HPT. As hard as it was to get my period, it actually softened the blow for me a little bit. (not much, but a little).

ETA: after all my failed IUI's I never had a beta because I always got my period the day before beta day.

Thank you. I was hoping some people from IF would come respond Chat Icon

My RE said that I have to come in for the beta no matter what! He said sometimes people have bleeding and they can still be pregnant - so I have to go in for it anyway.

You'd think after 13 months of BFNs that I'd have my decision made already... but I still don't know what is worse for me personally. Sometimes I like the BFNs because it takes away the surprise of AF coming.

Yes, definitely confusing. I think I understand what you mean - but I think it would still be too much for me. I think for me -

I would just test in your example at 12DPO and say to myself ok maybe it's positive maybe it's not - I can't really rely on that because I don't know if the trigger is out but I will know for sure soon. This way I don't get my hopes up or down to high. Otherwise that whole time my emotions would be going crazy.

MAM, I would wait for the beta. You know how much I hate BFN/BFP mess ups so I would just want to know "for sure" one way or the other.

I picked other because I'm thinking that you could just wait until 13DPO and test on that day. That way, if it's BFN you have a heads up and aren't blind-sided by the phone call about your beta the next day and if it's BFP then, YEAH!, you get to celebrate a day early!!

Re: Which is worse?

I think that it is going to be torture - but I think it's better to wait out the two weeks until your beta.

It's going to be hard - very very hard - but that's what we are here for.

Try and schedule alot during those two weeks also. Date nights with DH, a spa day, shopping with friends, things to keep your mind busy.

I feel like by you POAS everyday would just be very hard to take emotionally! Chat Icon
