Talk to me about retrieval please...

This is the one and only aspect of IVF that is freaking me out. I'm scared of the IV, and of going under general anesthesia. I've never been put under and I'd love to hear your expereinces with it, so I know what to expect.

Are you on the table when they knock you out, or is it before? Do they warn you? Are you completely out of it when you wake up? Freaked out a little? Do you feel sick? Where are you when you wake up?

You are in the room, on the table.
Do they warn you?
An anesthesiologist is there with you and gives you an injection, then tells you to count backwards.
Are you completely out of it when you wake up?
I've always woken like I just had a great nap.
Freaked out a little?
Never freaked out.
Do you feel sick?
Never felt sick.
Where are you when you wake up?
In the recovery area or holding area.

Re: Talk to me about retrieval please...

I was on the table when they inserted the IV..I started to feel a little burning in my arm which they said was normal...next thing I know I was being woken up in the recovery room...I felt groggy and sleepy afterwards and crampy.....they gave me a heating pad which helped. I wasn't freaked out at all.

ITA!!!

I was TERRIFIED before my first one as I'd never had any type of surgery before in my life. With that said,

They walked me into the OR, I layed on the table, asked the anestiologist how long it should take until I fell asleep, then next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. I had no trouble coming out of it, in fact apparently I was telling my husband to take pictures of me, and I even showed him how to work the camera on my phone. Re: Talk to me about retrieval please...

Ok, thank you ladies, this helps.

I suppose the reason I'm freaking out is the only other time I've had anesthesia was for my c-section, but I was awake during that, and it was truly the most terrifying experience , knocked me out for days, and I was vomiting from it.

I'll be very happy if it's nothing like that.

I was terrified also. Chat Icon (to the point that my BP shot up way too high and stayed there until I left Chat Icon )
I HATE IVs - THAT was the scariest part of the ENTIRE IVF cycle for me. Chat Icon
They had me sit in a chair w/ a warm blanket, then a while after they put the IV in... then they had me walk into the 'operating room' and lay on the table. Too much was happening around me and I closed my eyes. They must've given me the anestesia at that point b/c when I woke up I was being wheeled out of the OR and my retrieval was done. Piece of cake! I walked into the OR, laid on the table and before I knew it I was asleep. I woke up feeling a little groggy but that quickly passed. I walked out of the office feeling fine. The night of retrieval I had some discomfort but nothing unbearable. It's really not that bad at all. You will be fine. Best of luck!

Re: Talk to me about retrieval please...

I always say the hardest part of retrieval is getting dressed to go home...LOL...

Seriously, one time I walked in the door at 12pm, went into OR at 12:10pm. Got on the table (actually I find getting up on the table a struggle with the IV in my arm) and the next thing I knew DH was at my side it was all over and I look over at the clock and its 12:35pm. It felt like 6 hours had gone by.

I never have had any pain or bleeding or anything. Don't let this stress you out. So much to get stressed over, but this is the easy part.

Re: Talk to me about retrieval please...

Everyone is different under anesthesia and how they react to it...

They put my IV in when I was sitting in my bed, I walked over with it to the table and then lied down, before I could even see who was in the room I was out.

Waking up is different for everyone... while I was waiting my turn to go in for the retrieval, there was a girl behind the curtian next to me who woke up and was like... OH! Am I done? WOW! That was great! That was so quick! I can't believe it...

So I said to my mommy, OH... I hope I come out like that...

NOPE! I wake up and I start hysterical crying... My mommy runs over and was like why are you crying and I was like... I don't know... why am I crying!!! LOL!!! The nurses said that the anesthesia can bring on different kinds of emotions... then everyone was like... you are ok, and I was like I know I am... but why am I crying... and then I started hysterical laughing and that was it! (Oh, they woke me up on the table and then I moved to the bed that wheeled me back to my curtained area)

If you think you are going to be sick they can put a drug in the anesthesia in order to avoid you from throwing up... so ask them for that.

Seriously it is NOT BAD AT ALL! its crazy how fast they do everything, you are only under for like 15 mins tops...

GOOD LUCK!!
