would you be worried....
about TTC if you knew you were going to be laid off?  I was basically told today that its only a matter of time before our entire team is let go I work for one of the last large investment banks left standing, so there's going to be a huge layoff coming up. as excited as I would be to be PG I'd also be really scared what our future holds financially.....does anyone else feel this way?
I was really hoping to have a job until maternity leave comes along, its really scary to think I might have to be jobhunting while pregnant.

I think everyone is worried in this economy BUT me personally would not put anything on hold! In the past year, I have learned that life is short and anything is possible- your life can change in a heartbeat! if having a baby is your dream and your ready to try then go for it! It'll all work out in the end- it always does!

oh my gosh Helen, I'm so sorry!! You must be so stressed out!
My situation shouldn't be too affected the economy, but I totally understand your worries! 
Somehow people make it work , even in the toughest of times. I guess it depends on you and your husband's comfort level.

I totally agree... You will always make things work. you can't always plan around what-ifs. But at the same time both you and your partner have to have faith and be comfortable with the decision!

thanks ladies......we're definitely ready emotionally to be PG.....but the uncertainty of even finding another job def. scares the bejesus out of me, this is adding all kinds of stress to even think "ok when will the layoff happen?? will I have a job next week???"....not a comforting feeling!! and honestly after we do have a baby I was planning on at least working part time since we would not be able to afford everything on DH's salary alone. unless he got a 2nd job, but considering he's an electrician, and construction will be cut back soon too, so I can't even see that happening either. the what if's are killing me right now, but hopefully we will find a way to make everything work if things do take a turn for the worse.

I feel your pain, my job is compromised by the economy as well and we have already laid someone off - it is just a matter of time before another one is let go. I too was concerned about TTC but the previous posters are right, somehow it will work out and we have to go forward with our plans.

First I'm sorry you got this news. Do you think you'd be able to find another job soon after? I would start looking now if I was you.
For me personally yes I would be worried. I make the majority of the money and without it we would not be able to pay the mortgage. I'm pretty sure I will always have to work. However I'm in accounting so there are usually always jobs. I would mostly be worried about not getting hired if I was pregnant and showing or even if I wasn't showing if be worried about not getting any paid time off to have the baby.

I came home from work all freaked out and was venting to DH, and at least he thinks we'll be ok.......Ii'm usually the one who does all the worrying in this relationship, so its good to hear his reassurance. that will def. carry me through anything that happens to us!! I really almost wish I wouldn't have heard that at work today but I guess they're trying to prepare us so we can line up other options.

Could I easily find a lower paying job with benefits while I searched for a better job?
Also, keep in mind that if you work for a company with at least 50 employees within a 75 mile radius, you won't be eligible for FMLA until you've been working for at least 12 months and 1250 hours (if you work for a smaller company, you won't be eligible for FMLA at all). Without FMLA, your job isn't protected and your employer isn't obligated to pay for your health insurance while on leave. This may or may not be a concern for you. I'm sorry you're going through this.

we have a little bit saved, but not enough to hold us over for a year.....my medical benefits are through DH's job, so that should be ok. but please explain this FMLA thing to me again.....I didn't realize there were all these restrictions.
I'd have to be working for a company for a year straight before receiving FMLA? then I'm royally screwed if I lose my job!!

I kept thinking about putting it off. I am now 18 weeks pregnant, DH just got let go, and my firm is not doing well either. It's never a good time. I just have to believe that everything will work out!!!

OMG Christine!!!!! I wasn't frequently on these boards when you announced your pregnancy, so here's my belated CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!! I hope your firm gets through these tough times, your in my prayers!!

I wouldn't put it off.
You'll receive unemployment, so it's not like you'll be knocked down to 0.
Plus, if it takes them a while to do lay offs, you may be able to collect unemployment and stay home with the baby.
FMLA, I think it depends on the company how strict they want to be with it. I know the last 2 companies I worked for let the employees take it who were under a year employment.

Not true, FMLA is a Department of Labor Regulation...and must abide by the rules of 1 year of employment or 1,250 hrs.
Don't forget, FMLA is just protecting your job and is an unpaid leave incentive. In most companies, you will recieve STD (Short Term Disablity), which is a % of your pay up to 26 weeks per year. (Typically, most new mothers are approves for about 6-8 weeks)- Also look into companys that you can have a flex work schedule..Some employers have a rule that you may not be eligble for STD until 60 days after employment.
Helen, If you are aware you may lose your job, I would suggest updating your resume and start looking for a new one. No reason to wait around. Please FM me if you want some contacts.
Also, just let life happen - If you and your husband happen to get blessed with a little angel, then just let life happen...Sure I'd be nervous, but when there is a will there is a way...And I think based on the realtionship with your husband, you both can get through anything!

I agree. I'm conservative, but if you don't have enough saved to support yourselves and a little one for a year or so (there have been people on here unemployed for that long or longer, and unable to find jobs), I would wait.
Honestly, I just got PG, and I cannot imagine handling the stress of being PG and worrying for my own job and DH's.

I don't know. It woul depend on how old I was. If I was younger with time on my side I might delay. However, I'm in my 30s, so I would not wait. My thinking is life never works out perfectly and there is never a perfect time.

Eligibility for FMLA is calculated at the time you take your leave. FMLA basically provides you job protection for 12 weeks. If you're covered under your employer's health insurance plan, you are also entitled to receive the same health insurance benefits for those 12 weeks. Employers with 50 or more employees within a 75 mile radius are covered under FMLA. Employees (of companies with 50 or more employees) who work for at least 12 months AND 1250 hours in those 12 months are entitled to FMLA leave. Hope this answers your questions.

I was laid off from American Home Mtg last August, my son was 1 and we only owned our house for a year. My point is something can happen at anytime......there will never really be a "perfect" time so do whats in your heart.

I also had my son less then 12 mos after being with the company.....I found out I was PG the day they offered me the job. I was not eligible for FMLA, but my bosses valued me so much that they held my position until I was ready to come back.

I'll be 29 in a few months, DH will be 34 in April, considering ideally we'd love to have prob. 3 kids, we really want to start now.....we've been together 8 years so it already kinda feels like its overdue, we're ready to raise a child together and I know there's really never a perfect time, I just hope god is looking out for us in the next few months!!
