Feline Leukemia...

My sister has 4 cats. One of them, Wheels, became ill last week. When she brought him to the vet, she found out the poor guy had feline leukemia, and wasn't going to last much longer, so she had to put the cat to sleep.
Is there a way her other cats can get it? Wheels kept to himself and spent his days under the bed, but they all share the same food and water...are the other cats in danger? Anyone know?

Don't want to upset you, but I would def have her get the other cats tested asap. it is transmitted through contact via saliva, feces, bites , eating and drinking from the same bowls.

yeah, that's what i figured....and i think the vet might have told her that also.
I just feel so badly for her now...she's got a 1-year old, her husband is away in some training camp until November (he left in August), they're moving to Vermont in a few months....and now all of her cats could die. Just not fair.

My cat was a carrier who lived a happy 10 years AND I had another cat along with her who was fine.

Re: Feline Leukemia...

My cat has feline leukemia as well, since a kitten, and he's 14 years old. However, he's never been exposed to other cats...it is transmittable, but not an automatic death sentence. There is a high mortality rate, but some can live long, healthy lives.

I am assuming the other cats didn't have the leuk. vaccine?

I hope they are all ok. Chat Icon
