Helping a Leukemia Patient
My stepfather was diagnosed with leukemia yesterday. He starts Chemo today and in the hospital for the next 4-6 weeks at least. I want to make a care packages for him. Please see my ideas and please let me know if you have any suggestions.
My main question: Where can I buy a long distance phone card so he can call his brothers?
The first one for Entertainment : Magazines Soduku book Other Word Puzzles A long distance phone card A notebook and pens and some stationary for correspondence.
The second package is for Comfort : Straws and Lipbalm - As I know Chemo can cause dry mouth and sores Hats - as I know he'll lose his hair. Green Tea and chamomile Tea
I also want to make a box for my mom to keep in her car as I know she'll be back and forth to the hospital for several weeks. Water Bottles Advil & Tylenol Tissues Snacks A notebook and Pens

Re: Helping a Leukemia Patient
First of all, for your Stepfather and for you and your family.
Second of all, you're extremely thoughtful for doing all of this for him. It seems like your lists are pretty thorough.
For Entertainment, not sure if he likes music, but maybe pack up a CD player and buy him some CDs from his favorite artists?
For comfort, maybe some travel-sized health and beauty products (shampoo, deodorant, etc.? Maybe a nice big towel?

Re: Helping a Leukemia Patient
I'm so sorry to hear about your stepfather! He's in my prayers!
I'll add:
Comfy slippers
A robe
Unscented lotions (chemo dries the skin)
Tums
You can get calling cards at most gas stations
Movies/DVD's (especially COMEDIES)
For your mom:
Books on strength (the Chicken Soup series is great)
I think what you're doing is great!

Re: Helping a Leukemia Patient
I get long distance phone cards at Costco b/c they are pretty cheap there.
How about some type of sucking candy for his dry mouth?
I was also going to suggest a big comfy bathrobe.
How about some snacks for your mom to keep in the car, granola bars or small bags of snacks, raisins, nuts, etc.
for all of you.

Re: Helping a Leukemia Patient
I know somethings my brother always requested was:
Knit pajama pants
Gatorade - Helps you stay hydrated
Breath Mints
Lollypops - Helps relieve cotton mouth
Low cut socks - His skin was so irittated that these helped
A comfortable Body Pillow- In th Hospital you spend so much time in the bed and this helped him get more comfortable

Re: Helping a Leukemia Patient
first off... for you and for your step dad...
this is such a thoughtful and wonderful thing you are doing...everyone here has given you excellent ideas..to add I would say if you could get a portable dvd player thats a great thing...also a radio with some music cds he likes..
His comforter from home might make him feel more comfortable as well...
