12 weeks----UNPAID. And that includes my vacation time. So I basically get zero vacation either. Mind you I work a huge international company...their benefits suuck too.
That sounds very odd that a huge international company would not have better maternity leave!
Before working freelance, I worked for an international company whose HQ was in France-- where you get a YEAR off for maternity. If I was still working there, I would get 2 weeks paid at 60%, and the remaining 10 weeks NADA.
Women in this country need to seriously speak up about maternity leave policies. It is SO misogynistic it makes me so ANGRY.
I thought about making a stink about it once. But I just know it will fall on deaf ears.

however - in those countries they pay HUGE amounts of taxes... the money has to come from somewhere. I don't think US citizens would be willing to pay those taxes.
I get 4 weeks before my due date at full pay, then 6 weeks for vag or 8 weeks for c-sec at 2/3 pay.

Re: How much maternity leave does your work give you?
I get 8 weeks for c-sec paid 60% and a total of 12 weeks (FMLA) to hold my job... so I will have 4 weeks that isn't paid and I will use some of my vacation time for that.. it stinks but what can I do.

Assuming you've been there for at least 1 year and have worked 1,250 hours in the past year, you're entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave and continued health insurance under FMLA.
My firm is too small to fall under FMLA. I doubt I'll get any paid time off, but I hope to take 3-4 months of leave. I haven't discussed the specific terms of my leave yet.

Mine gives 3 months paid but 50% is paid during your maternity leave and 50% is paid in one lump sum 6 months after you return.
I feel like the US has the worst maternity leave compared to our international counterparts. Most European countries give 1 year!
Your company actually has a VERY generous plan.

Re: How much maternity leave does your work give you?
I get 100% pay for 9 weeks for vaginal delivery and 11 weeks for C-Section. Plus we get 4 weeks of vacation that we are allowed to tack on. After that we are entitled to a total of one year of unpaid leave where they will still guarantee you a job.
Since I am on bed rest for the next 2+ months I am on short term disability with full pay plus my vacation days from this year will continue to accrue. Once i have the baby the maternity policy will kick in. I hope to take a minimum of 4 months, possibly 6 months maternity if financially possible.

That is true, but FMLA is not paid leave, it just gaurentees your spot for 12 weeks. I am not worried about losing my position at work, but going 3 months without pay would hurt.

The unpaid part definitely sucks, but as someone who technically is not entitled to any leave and is not protected under FMLA, 12 weeks of leave and job protection is better than nothing.
It really sucks that the U.S. has such terrible maternity leave laws.

It does suck. I think I would also prefer if this were a Fed issue instead of State. My company is based in NJ, which has better state maternity disability benefits than NY. I think this is why my company has no policy.
I'm really not sure if I qualify for FMLA either because I don't think the NY office has 50 employees (I work in civil engineering, so the office only has about 20 people, but during construction season we could have 50+ because of the field guys) and the NJ office is more than 75 miles from the NY office.
I shouldn't whine though, there are other states that don't give any disability benefits for maternity.

Re: How much maternity leave does your work give you?
None! how is that for generosity?
I have to use up all of my sick and vacation days, and then the balance comes from NYS disability.
this is what I get for being in a male dominated field.....

ah but those huge taxes also pay for national health insurance... if you add together all of our taxes (sales, income, property....) and THEN add to it the $$$ we lay out every year for health care (co-payments, out of pocket expenses, insurance premiums) we end up paying MUCH more than anyone else, and getting much less.....
It's a scandal for sure.... all to benefit the insurance industry.
