I feel so guilty

I know we are doing the right thing for our pregnant kitty friend by keeping her in a room upstairs, so that she's in a safe place when she's ready to deliver...

...but I can't help but be overwhelmed with the feeling that she's bored. We need to keep her confined to that room because we have another cat, and don't want to stress her out and send her into pre-term labor.

But the cat lover in me feels so ridiculously guilty for keeping her cooped up in there. Chat Icon

DH has been trying to convince me that she feels safe in there, whereas before, she would have been hard-pressed to find a safe place to deliver.

Please, someone tell me I'm doing the right thing. Chat Icon

she can't be around your other cats for health reasons and will want a safe quiet place to deliver when her babies come.

can you get her some cat toys and go down and spend time with her? i understand the guilt thing---we had to lock up my cat in a spare bedroom for over a month until i knew it was "safe" for her to be out on her own at night. it broke my heart, but i knew it was the best thing.

can't wait to see those baby kittens! Chat Icon

You are totally doing the right thing. She will be very busy very soon. Visit her often and I agree, get her some toys. Most cats sleep most of the time anyway (house cats that is).

How does she act when you go in there?

aww--you're doing the right thing! just keep visiting her and make sure she's comfortable. i'm sure she doesn't feel much for playing with toys that shes so close giving birth--but you could leave a toy or two!

I go in about once every 2 hours. She always meows when I come in, rubs against me and lets me pet her for about 30 seconds, goes and eats a little, and then lays down and falls asleep.

I keep thinking that if she really wanted to get out, she'd be scratching at the door...right? She hasn't done that once, so that has to mean something...

I did bring in some toys for her--I even bought her a feather teaser. She looked interested for about 10 seconds and then she flopped down and closed her eyes again Chat Icon

The GOOD news is that, for the first time, while we were in there watching her, she climbed into the little "birthing bed" we made for her, and she started arranging the blankets! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm sure she's just getting a feel for it--but I'm going to be extra tempted to check on her in the middle of the night!

Beth, she sounds fine. And you are right, she would be scratching for sure. She really sounds very content!

I can't wait to hear the birth story!

Re: I feel so guilty

You are definitely doing the right thing. If she wanted out, she would let you know. Trust me, my cat yowls when he wants out of somewhere.
My guess is that she is really happy and feels safe and secure in the room.Chat Icon

Do not question even for a second that you are doing the right thing. She is safe, cared for, and comfortable.

I have never been pregnant before, but I can only imagine if I was, I wouldn't be upset that nobody was playing with me. I'd want to relax and be left alone.

You can try maybe leaving on a radio with soft music to soothe her.

Whatever you do, just know you are doing the best thing for her.

I forgot to add --- be careful how many blankets you leave around. I read in a book you have to be careful that the kittens don't get caught up in them so less is better.

Re: I feel so guilty

HMM...we lined her birthing bed with an old comforter that we're planning to throw out. Last night, when she was arranging it, she went underneath the 1st layer.

Maybe I should change it out for towels? Chat Icon

You are dong a wonderful thing!!! Don't doubt yourself for a second!

She probably doesnt even realize there is anything outside the door, she is content in the safe place you have made for her.

Re: I feel so guilty

You are doing the right thing!! You should be so proud of you and your DH for taking her in!

I was in a similar situation when I was working at Walgreens in High School. There was a very pregnant stray trying to get into the store to have her kittens, I took her home to my parents house and she had to stay in a room all by herself until she gave birth because we had other cats and worried about her safety. It only took a few days and then after she gave birth a friend took her and the kittens to her house and she ended up keeping the Mommy.

You are doing the best thing for her! Keep us posted on her progress, kittens are the cutest!!
