how do you feel about this?

Re: Spinoff, what do we think about SAHD

My DH is all for it - but we can't afford to have only one income.
He can do some work from home though, so it may be an option one day Chat Icon
I would love to be able to have one of us at home with any children we have

I was actually hoping DH would get to be a PT stay at home dad. As a college professor he has a great schedule- home two days a week. It would have been great.

When I was little my mom worked nights and my dad worked 9-5 so while not a true SAHD, he was very hands-on and we both have nice memories of that time. But DH's position is up at the end of the year; if he finds something at a college that would be great, otherwise it will be FT work for him and FT daycare for our kids, if/when we have them.

I love the idea... If I can find a job that pays well enough my DH will stay home with Nate during the day while he continues with law school at night.

I think its perfectly fine. Whoever makes more money should work and the other can stay home.

Re: Spinoff, what do we think about SAHD

I have a friend who does it and it is great for them. He was a teacher and his wife made WAY more $$ than he did, and had better benefits, so it made more sense for him to stay home. He does a great job and they are all happy.

We have actually discussed this, because I have much better benefits than DH and he has a job that would be more flexible in scheduling and working from home than I do. I don't know if it would ever happen though.

In general, if it works for another couple, more power to them.

For me, I couldn't stand it if he stayed home. He's completely not qualified.

While he cooks amazing dinners, he forgets to feed them lunch. When I ask him "Why didn't you feed them, it's 3:30?!" His answer is "I asked if they wanted lunch, they said no." For God's sake, she's 2 - she also wants to run around naked in the winter - set some boundaries!

At least I can count on the 4 year old to feed her whipped cream & maple syrup cracker sandwiches...you'd THINK the 37 year old could figure out something.Chat Icon

DH was a F/T SAHD until this month. He definitely had some trouble multi-tasking and there were a lot of moments that I was at work wanting to pull my hair out), but I thought it was great he wanted to do it.

I think it was a great bonding experience for him and Andrew, but I have to admit I am a little relieved that Andrew is in day care 3 days a week now...

Re: Spinoff, what do we think about SAHD

My BIL did this with my niece for a while and it was great for both of them (as far as I know). She is 20 and very well-adjusted and has a great relationship with both of her parents.

My brother, however, is a SAHD -- but his wife continues to do all the errands, laundry, cleaning... and she works lots of overtime. Personally, I wouldn't put up with it - not the way he is doing it. Plus the kids are old enough now where they don't even need anyone to be home. I think the real issue is that he can't find a job, and is too proud to accept the ones he could get.
