Ladies, please help. I don't know what to do.
This may not sound like a serious problem to any of you, but believe me it is causing major problems for me and DH.
We have been going over names, and I knew we would have a rough time, because with our other DS it took us forever to agree on a name. But, since DH hates my favorite name (Aidan) I thought I would be a good wife, and make a list of other names I would consider using. SO I put together a list of 30 names. 30!!! And when he got home, I read them to him one by one, and one by one he rejected every single one. Not even an,"it's okay" to any of them. He is sticking with wanting it to be William. I don't like that name at all, and he thinks I am just saying that because he likes it. He even mentioned casually today that he might just DEMAND that he be named William.
So as he was leaving for the gym just now, he said well....if you don't like William, then it has to be an old fashioned name that you would hear in a Western. WTH? What kinds of names do you hear in Westerns? I don't know what to do and he seriosuly laughs at all of my suggestions.
Do any of you know any old fashioned Western sounding names that wouldn't force our child to be beaten to death on the playground?

Two of the names we played around with that might fit the bill:
Cade(can't use it because my dog is named Caden) Justice(DH's aunt did the geneaology of the family and this was one of the ancestors names)

We're going through the same thing--though limiting names to ones you'd find in Westerns is a bit extreme...
I'm not a big fan of the name William either...but what if you came up with a cute nickname? My nephew's name is William on his birth certificate, but he doesn't even know that William is his name. We call him Liam, which I LOVE for a name.
Good luck--I know what a battle this whole thing is.

Your post made me laugh. That's a man for you!! A western...
But, if you think about it, there are a lot of cool names that could fit into that category.
A few:
Wyatt Travis Jude Jesse Hunter
and a name I wanted to use if my DD had been a boy- one of my all time favorites....
Cash
Good Luck!! You will figure it out..

nope you give birth and you carry the baby. You get to name it. That's how I'd handle it. It would be him making "suggestions" to me if he wished, but no way does he have the final say.

Re: Ladies, please help. I don't know what to do.
I totally understand DH is the same way about names. At first he wanted Augustus and then he wanted Aristotle. I kindly explained to him that he would get beated up on the playground. He didn't understand. Everyone thinks he was seriously joking. I just wanted a J name to name after my grandmother. Then out of the blue he comes out with Julio Cesar. One day, DH decided to do a coin toss - Aristotle or a J name (keep in mind he doesn't like Jason, Jeremy, Jacob, Joseph, James, etc. and I even mentioned naming it after his father who also passed away whose name was Jaime - NO GO) Anyways, I won the coin toss and then he picked a normal J name (Jack). He then made me promise that our next son was named Aristotle - but Im not having any more kids!

Wow.. Your DH seems a bit extreme!
Is there a special meaning to the name William that hes so set on??
When I hear "Western", I think of the name Clint or Wyatt- yuck!!!
I'm not a fan of William either. Keep in mind though- Billy is the nickname for William, so If you can live with that, then maybe you can make it work.

Re: Ladies, please help. I don't know what to do.
I totally feel your pain. We can't even talk about names anymore because it causes such an argument. It's part of the reason I want to find out so bad what we are having because at least then we only have to fight over one or the other. But of course he doesn't want to find out either.
Our fight is more over the middle name for a girl - he insists on naming her after his maternal grandmother. Not only do I hate the name, this woman was not a nice person....nor is his mother! Shoot me please.
I love Liam - maybe he will go for that?

Re: Ladies, please help. I don't know what to do.
I don't have any suggestions but I would straight out tell him it has to be a name you BOTH like. I had the same problem...he liked traditional names and I wanted something different. I made a list like you and he hated every one. Months later he finally agreed to one that he liked also. It needs to be a joint decision...don't let him demand you chose a name you don't like.

Re: Ladies, please help. I don't know what to do.
How about these:
Shane (Famous book cowboy) Clint (Clint Eastwood) John (John Wayne) Jesse (Jesse James) Wyatt (Wyatt Earp) Roy (Roy Rogers)
Austin: The last name of Stephen Austin and the Texas capital, Austin has been popular for some time now.
Jackson: Another city in Wyoming, although most parents who choose this name are probably linking it more to U.S. President Andrew Jackson or to Civil War General Stonewall Jackson.
This website had some good ones: #1
And this one: #2
And one more: #3
Good Luck

Re: Ladies, please help. I don't know what to do.
OK, I'm outing myself on this thread. I'm not a fan of the modern trend of unusual names. I like things to be old-school.... We like 'old-school' german and polish names... names of men throughout the ages...
I think I know what your DH means... I bet he doesn't LITERALLY mean 'names in a western'.... he means traditional/timeless names, rather than more trendy/contemporary ones. I've noticed modern name choices frequently are either unusual, or inspired by a foreign name (ex. Liam Chloe).
so in your case (I'm taking for granted you're both american and not fresh off the boat people like me and DH), your DH likely wants a traditional american man's name.... like what our uncles and grandfathers were named. examples: william, john, james, stephen, mark, luke, eric, matthew.....
For people in our mindsets, names like Liam (instead of william) or Chloe will only work if you're irish or french...
I WOULD insist, however, that your DH get off of his high-horse and compromise with you on a first and middle name. Don't let him get his way just becuase he displays stubborness. He has to learn to come to decisions WITH you concerning your child... otherwise your kid will quickly wise-up and work you and DH against each other to get his way.

Re: Ladies, please help. I don't know what to do.
Awww sweetie, i just read this and first but don't worry your baby will have a GREAT name.
DH and I are leaning toward "Shane". Not for any "western" vibe, we both just like it and I think its a nice strong name. DH is OTB (off the boat) Irish and he prefers it 1000x over "Sean".
Also LIAM is both a nickname for William AND a full name in and of itself (my nephew's LIAM!!).
Just last weekend I met 2 little brothers named Wyatt and Logan. I also know 2 Codys, a Cole and a Jesse. None of those appeal to me for our little guy, but to each his own.
I always thought MATT had a nice "western" feel to it, but I'm with Lori (above) -- is he REALLY saying he wants a western name?

Re: Ladies, please help. I don't know what to do.
I have an idea....
why not get HIM to now come up with a list of 30 names he wouldn't mind and let you pick from it?
you can give him a few name websites to help.....
IMO, neither parent has the right to dictate to the other what the name of their child will be... there must be input from both.... since you writing a list didn't help, maybe if he does it, you'll see a name you like.
