Black tie means tux. Black tie optional means you can wear a suit. Never heard of anything otherwise. You can always ask if unsure, but to just show up in a suit when it is listed as black tie is not cool. Sorry.
Totally agree. There's really no "gray area" here.

I ALWAYS see men in dark suits at a black tie wedding. I think it's perfectly appropriate. I think requesting "black tie" on an invite is inappropriate anyway.
