Disability?
My sister told me that because I don't get paid maternity leave, that I should get a letter from my Dr. (when the time comes, of course) that would make me eligible for disability (short term.) She says it won't be too much, but a little something to take the edge off not getting paid for 12 weeks. Has anyone else heard of this?
PS- She hasn't had a baby, she just knows some women that she works with who have done this.

Re: Disability?
I don't get paid matenity leave either, but I do get paid short term disability for 6 weeks. Maybe you should ask your HR department about it?

to the OP: definitely ask at your job because i am a teacher also and we are NOT eligible for disability until we have taken 60 sick days. every job is completely different, even in the same field. ask your HR person

I'm a teacher in NC...so it might be different. I can take up to three months disability half pay and after that, three more months on a quarter pay.

FMLA is 12 weeks leave in a given year. But the disability part is depending on your employer to offer it. You might be entitled to some NYS disability if your company does not offer their own.
