Another RE Question..
Do they give you a pelvic exam? Or, does it depend how far you need to take the treatments?
I got my list today from my doc... and I have heard that NYU is the best in Manhattan. Anyway-- they have several docs, but only one is a woman and she does not have an appt available until JULY!
There are other women on the list from other practices and programs, but I am trying to figure out-- do I go to the best, or do I try to find a woman. I am so not into getting in those stirrups and having a man examine me-- I am way too shy for that. But, I have had my *** examined by a man in order to get the best health care, I guess I can show my vajayjay if that is what's best. God help me

Yes, they usually do an internal sonogram.

Re: Another RE Question..
Internal sono, yes. I've never had a Pelvic exam. But you may need to get used to the fact that sometimes it may be a man doing procedures - if you have to go for an HSG, for example.
I used to be the same as you - only saw femal gynos. But after all this IF crap I have been poked and prodded so much, I don't care, as long as its getting me closer to being pregnant.
July seems a long time to wait.

I agree-and go to the best don't worry about sex. Chances are if you do a cycle with them(IUI for ex.) you will not see your doc all the time anyway and they don't give you notice. GL!

Totally agree.
I had never seen a man gyno before, and being at my RE's practice all the doctors roatate morning monitoring, so I had to get over my shyness rather quickly.

Re: Another RE Question..
yeah, I would not wait til July... but, I would try to find another practice.
I need to consider all of this and think about it over the weekend. I definitely want to get an appt on the calendar on Monday. My gyno and their radiologist are all affiliated with NYU, so I would like to just stick with them-- and with them having the best reputation, I think that's probably best.

Re: Another RE Question..
Unfortunately all modesty and shyness goes out the window if you get involved with fertility testing and treatments. My RE is a male but he only examined me once and my HSG was done by a male. All of my monitoring has been by female nurses and physician assistants. HTH!
ETA: Any time a male doctor is examining you or performing a test, a female nurse must be present.

Re: Another RE Question..
I would get an appointment with the best place the soonest you can (if that means with a man, so be it).
I actually prefer a male OBGyn.
Good luck to you!

I agree on both counts. I've had some bad experiences with female GYNs and prefer a male GYN. If you are really anxious about seeing a male I'm sure you can schedule a visit to meet them first before doing any procedures.

That is not always 100%. The doctor can choose (male or female MD) to have a female (doesnt always mean it is a nurse) to be in the room and usually many male doctors go that route, but it is not required.

Re: Another RE Question..
I did read that an RE at the NYU practice is considered the best by NY Magazine. I think his name is Graff. Up until recently my RE group didn't have a female doctor. And each RE kept getting younger looking. Seriously, it doesn't matter. I think for some reason IF seems to attract men doctors. I have my theories on that ($$$$$).
Go with the best. After a while you wont care who looks at what. A doctor is a doctor. They've seen it all.
Good luck.

Re: Another RE Question..
I had an internal with my RE at my first visit.
As far as gender... I am one of the rare people that actually prefers male doctors for just about every type of medical care - and actually even moreso for gyn or fertility care. My regular team of OB/GYNs are all male. My RE is male. I saw one female docotr for IUIs, because she was on call, but she was not my primary RE.
For me, I felt as if the male doctor was a little more detached from the "personal" aspect of it all. I do not think a doctor has to have the same "parts" as a patient to practice his science. I need a scientist, not a hand holder but that is just my preference.

Re: Another RE Question..
I don't know if this will make you feel better, but...there's honestly no need for him to "see" anything.
When I go for my internals, I'm covered with a sheet. The sono tech has me reach for the wand under the sheet and do the insertion myself. Then the tech takes over. No peeking involved.

Re: Another RE Question..
I would tell you to go to the doctor you feel is best and you are most confident in. You have to feel comfortable with the office and staff because you will be working closely with them and often! Modesty does go right out the window. DH was with me for my first appt. and was in the room for the exam and transvaginal u/s. RE even included a quick rectal exam. When I started with the RE I didn't care about a man or a woman giving me an exam...I just wanted to have a baby!
