Spinoff to legalizing or not legalizing drugs - why legalizing drugs?
For the people who want to legalize drugs, I would be very interested in knowing why, the benefits, etc.....
I personally don't see any benefits (except maybe medical benefits of marijuana when justified medically and supervised).
If it's because "every body does it anyway", is that really a reason?

im not really sure why i think pot should be legal. Not what youre looking for right?
I guess bc i dont really see the harm in it AS LONG AS it doesnt lead to other drugs. IMO, drinking can be just as bad AND can become an addiction.
Ive YET to meet a person addicted to pot.

legalized drugs can be taxed if drugs were legal the number of people in prisons would be halved legal drugs can be regulated legal drugs would be harder for kids to get
i could go on and on
i dont believe that all drugs should be legal but i do believe the marijuana should be!

Re: Spinoff to legalizing or not legalizing drugs - why legalizing drugs?
in the late 19th century, there were a lot of coke addicts.....
I don't think it's a good idea to legalize recreational drugs. It makes it socially acceptable. could you imagine legal HEROIN?
sure, drug trafficking arrests and organized crime would go down, but everyone would be stoned.
As for the gov't regulating the drugs in a legal manner, they're not doing a terribly good job with all the prescription drugs.... abuse is rampant, and people die every day from overdoses.
to entrust them to regulate recreational drugs would create a giant mess IMO
(disclaimer: I'm a drug abuse researcher....)

Re: Spinoff to legalizing or not legalizing drugs - why legalizing drugs?
i'm in favor of legalizing marijuana.
here are some of my reasons why (in no random order)...
1. there are hundreds of thousands of people incarcarated for posession (a non-violent offense). we are spending BILLIONS of tax dollars on incarcarating them. if posessing weed were legal, we wouldn't incur this expense and the funds could be spent elsewhere in a more constructive way.
2. it does serve medicinal purposes.
3. in California, pot is the LARGEST cash crop. the second is grapes. why not cash in on this?

I dont really have an opinion either way, I dont smoke pot. On the other hand...I know a few people who are addicted to pot, but I think its more along the lines of they "think" it eases their stomach, anxiety, headaches, etc. so when they have any of this they smoke. But the one person I know who is addicted has recently said after 2 days of not smoking...I never thought I could be addicted but Im dying for a doobie

I think pot should be legalized, but not other drugs like herion or cocaine, meth, etc.
You don't see people dying everyday from pot, but you do from alcohol related illness and cigarette smoking. Most adults who smoke pot are working people, not junkies that you see sitting in the street all day, so I think that shows that its not something that will ruin the lives of most people. Alcohol and other drugs seem to do that more often than pot does.
