I would have def called the police. That poor child
Wow, this day and age, my mom would be in jail, I guess . And I hardly consider her someone who "beat" her children.
Yup, my mom too! lol
me too.
but smacking a child on the HEAD. that would have left me feeling uneasy.
I'm all for a whooping every now and that, but hard smacks on the head can do damage,,,,that's not cool.
not sure what I would have said or done...I would need to be there.
I might have said...looks like she's getting to you today...I know the feeling...but you never know who will see this and think something bad..take care....just to let her know she was a bit off the hook.

but these werent light smacks she was giving the baby. but then again, my perception of light smack is subjective i suppose.
I would say smacks are subjective. I just smacked myself on the forehead and although it stings, I barely hit myself and it sounded loud.
The other thing I wanted to say is some children cry if you even look at them, or tap them. So if you combine the two, I don't know if I can say a crying child who got smacked is neccessarily abused.
A closed fisted hit, well that would certainly be abuse.

It happened to me.
This woman was at the park & hitting her toddler son. She had a baby in her hands & whacked him a few times.
I asked her if she wanted help.
She burst into tears. She sat down on my blanket & said "I know everyone thinks I'm a lunatic." I told her "Nope. Just the ones that don't have children. I leave one at home so I have 2 hands free." She had just moved to Huntington. Her DH was working late hours. She hadn't unpacked the house with a newborn & a toddler. She was a wreck.
My son played with her son for a bit & then we went on our way.
I think it would depend on the situation, how hard the hit was, etc.
that was really nice of you. see now approaching like THIS is one thing---saying "hey--i'm a mom--and i can give ya a hand" is totally different than how some people do the "omg why are you smacking your kid! what are you doing!"
i'm sure she was grateful that you could give her a few minutes to vent and relax

ITA. This is the only way I would and have intervene. Sometimes, a mother is just at the end of her rope and having someone offer to help is enough to snap her back.

I would have minded my own business. how one disciplines their child is none of my business. You run your family your way and I'll run my family my way.

I wouldn't have done anything. Who knows what the back story is. Sounds like she was at the end of her rope. I know I've had days where I've lost my temper and snapped at my dd and she started to cry. And then I felt even worse. If that had happened in public and someone approached me I would probably have freaked out on them.
what she said!

Re: What would you have done?
I might have gasped or said "OMG!" out loud (to make sure she could hear me). but I would not have said anything to her directly.

Re: What would you have done?
This makes me so mad AND sad for that child....who knows what the heck is going on in their home? I can understand being at the end of your rope but hitting like that, in my book, is unacceptable.
I was in Target a few months ago and saw a woman do the same thing (I'm wondering if it was the same woman now) and DH would not let me go over to her. I hated myself for the rest of the day. Children don't understand when to stop crying sometimes-that's why they are children! They don't know any better. Plus, in this incident, the 2-3 year old was just saying she was hungry. Next time I will probably call security. A flinching, cowering child makes me want to

Re: What would you have done?
I can speak from personal experience - saying something to that mom would have made things worse for the child...
