If anyone thinks I am intolerant to this- you are right. I watched both my Nan and FIL die slow horrible deaths from emphysema due to smoking.
I can't imagine exposing my children to that same poison even one time and thinking it's ok.

But would you keep your Nan & FIL from your children if they smoked?

There's a difference between cutting out all the smokers in your family and prohibiting them from smoking around your children. Honestly, I think there are few people in this world who would choose the right to smoke in front of a child over seeing that child at all...

You'd be surprised. They would make it an issue of being told what to do in thier own home.

Let's remember its not illegal and its
someone's right to smoke if they want to.

well that's all fine and dandy---but i think someone has a right to say they think its disgusting and selfish to smoke around kids.

what about the kids right NOT to have to inhale smoke just because mommy or daddy has to have a fix? i'm sure a baby or toddler doesn't say "SWEET! Yummy smoke!!!!" They don't get a choice in it.

I used to smoke---but that is just something I would NEVER EVER do---if I needed a cig---I would not smoke with a child around me. Its completely selfish and says "i don't care if you have no choice in breathing this in....I'm gonna do it anyway"

I don't smoke. I can't STAND the smell of it, it makes me cough and gag. I wouldn't want to subject a child to it and I also look over and feel bad for children trapped in cars with a smoker... However...

I think I am a little older than the average age on here. My mom used to smoke with my sister and I in the car (no one knew it was 'bad' at the time). I'm not dead yet, but based on what I am reading here, apparently I could go at any time now Chat Icon

It's like I always say "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" - No one on here is perfect and many people put their children at risk in a variety of situations that they could prevent.

I chose 'OTHER' because I don't think in the grand scheme of things exposure to an ocassional cigarette is a big deal. Chain smoking in front of a child is a big deal. One a year, not a big deal.

I don't want to sound rude but wouldn't it be better for all involved if he just pulled over?

I am sure he hangs himself out that far b/c he feels bad and he knows how unhealthy it can be for your daughter.

I know it's an addiction and not easy to just "wait" with the urges...

but he is also potentially putting himself in harms away...especially putting his head out the window on the road! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with this 100%

Even just one time is inexcusable, IMHO.

ETA: I am not a smoker, I would never do that if I was. I think it should be illegal and when I see people doing it - it literally makes me sick to my stomach. Like an above poster said - harm yourself, spare others - esp your children.

Let's remember its not illegal and its someone's right to smoke if they want to.

Of course it is not illegal - I just said I think it should be and by that I mean - specifically - smoking IN a car WITH your child IN the car - not smoking in general or smoking ALONE in your own car... just wanted to clear that up.

This was so BEAUTIFULLY SAID! I try to live my life by the "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" saying. It is true! First of all, a question was asked, another answered. She didnt ask for drama, she didnt ask to be "taught," she didnt ask to be mothered herself. She simply responded HONESTLY to a random post on the board. She wasnt asking for advice or statistics. We ALL have our own opinions and thats fine BUT to come AT someone is just wrong. Many do not agree with someone who posted on here..but most of you were polite and nice about it. For the people who werent, well..again, look up at the saying and truly think about it.

Just because something is legal doesn't make it healthy or safe.

Let's also remember that you don't have a right to harm others. This is one of the main reasons for the widespread and ever-increasing ban of smoking in public places, restaurants, etc. throughout the US.

Sure, smoking in front of your children is legal. That doesn't change my opinion as to whether or not it's safe, healthy, or a good idea.

Never.

As a teacher, I can tell you which of my students have (or in the past have had) parents who smoke based on how much their book bags and clothing smells.

Every single one of those children have had bronchial issues and chronic coughing fits that last for months. A few have had asthma. I think its shameful.

Honestly, I don't believe someone has to be perfect or without sin to have an opinion. I don't believe I (or too many other people) were stoning the only poster(s) who was (were) brave enough to admit a different opinion on this. I feel that I can disagree (even disagree with strongly) with something despite the fact that I'm not perfect or "without sin." I don't agree with personal attacks at all, but I don't think I made any. I dont' believe disagreeing with someone's position or actions in and of itself is a personal attack if it is done respectfully. I think I'm entitled to feel something is selfish, dangerous, or unhealthy even if people disagree with me, and I feel I'm entitled to voice that opinion. I also feel that the majority of posts on this thread were responding to the poll question generally, not just the one or two people who voiced a different opinion.

People disagree with plenty of things I do and they are just as entitled to their opinion as I am. I can't tell you how many people think I'm nuts and selfish to ride horses (especially when I trained babies / difficult horses). It is admittedly a dangerous sport, but I take all the precautions necessary and am comfortable with my very informed decision to continue in the sport. Parents make the same calls for their children and are entitled to do so.

I personally think smoking in front of non-smokers (especially children who have no choice in the matter) IS selfish and this post isn't going to change my opinion on that. One isn't without options that would minimize (or entirely eliminate the exposure to children and/or nonsmokers. That said, we're clearly not talking about my admittedly non-existent children here. If parents are fully informed and choose still to smoke in front of their kids, that's legally their call. There's nothing I can do about that, but I still have an opinion about it.

For most people, exposure to the second hand smoke of a few cigarettes in their lifetime probably ISN'T going to be that harmful. I don't think most of us thought this poll was talking about a few cigarettes, even though a poster or two was talking about that. I did make a point that exposure to a few cigs can be harmful (and it's true - it can be), but I took the gist of this poll and most of my posts to deal with people who regularly smoke in front of their children.

For those who thought my drunk driving example was too extreme... well, honestly, I don't judge whether I think the threat of a more immediate death is any worse than the threat of an early, slower death later in life. Plenty of people drive drunk and never get caught or hurt - doesn't make it right in my book. Again, perhaps an extreme example and a different risk, yes. Everyone is entitled to make their own decisions (within the bounds of the law) as to their comfort levels with different risks for themselves and their children. It's unrealistic, however, to think that other people won't have a different opinion at times. And, yes, it DOES bother me when I see people put their children's health in jeopardy by smoking in front of them. They have the right to do that, but it still bothers me. That said, I'm not running down these parents and saying things - I'm not championing to make smoking in front of children illegal. I'm stating an opinion here (and honestly, I think all the opinions that have been stated here are valid).

ETA -- I mean that that the opinions that differ from mine are just as valid as the ones I agree with. Just b/c I disagree doesn't mean that I don't respect that others have valid points.
