Sorry to post here - re: Question about smoking...

Did anyone quit JUST because they found out they were pregnant? I would like to know if you went back after giving birth. BELEIVE ME, I do not want to I just don't know if I will have the willpower that I do now that the baby is growing in me.

I quit the day I got a positive and haven't had a cigarette since. My DH is a smoker too. I have been smoke free since January 03Chat Icon

ETA: What may keep you motivated is there is nothing more disgusting than a baby that smells like cigarettesChat Icon

I did. I smoked close to a pack a day before I got married, then because my DH hates smoke, I went down to about 3 a day pretty easily after I got married, but I REALLY enjoyed those 3! I never smoked once throughout the pregnancy and I have had a total of 2 cigarettes in the past 6 months since my daughter's been born (one being last night Chat Icon )

I always said only 1/2 jokingly that I was going RIGHT back after she was born, but you know what, I never got the urge and I'm so grateful to my daughter for getting me to quit!!

Best of luck to you!!! Chat Icon

Re: Sorry to post here - re: Question about smoking...

I had quit right before I got married in 2002. Then had a cig here and there, but then when I found out I was PG I was seriously done. Ended up having one after I gave birth and was so disgusted I haven't had one again!!

I could kick myself for smoking as long as I did now that I'm a mommyChat Icon Chat Icon That makes me never go back to it again.

Re: Sorry to post here - re: Question about smoking...

Both my parents smoked. Before the age of 1, I was hospitalized & classified as a "saved SIDS case".

Here's one reason to continue not to smoke after having a baby:
KEY POINTS

1.) Though a direct causal relationship has not been established, prenatal and postnatal exposure to cigarette smoke have repeatedly been identified as significant risk factors for SIDS.

2.) In accordance with the "Back To Sleep" public health message, the SIDS Alliance continues to urge new parents and all those who care for infants to position babies on their backs for sleep; provide a smoke-free environment; use firm bedding materials; avoid overheating; breastfeed to build immunity; maintain good prenatal care, regular immunization schedules, and communication with your baby's doctor regarding any changes in health and behavior.

3.) Avoiding cigarette smoke is a recognized approach to reducing the risk of SIDS. However, it is important to refrain from making smoke exposure appear to be linked to all SIDS deaths. Many SIDS deaths occur in a smoke-free environment and many babies exposed to cigarette smoke do not die.

4.) The cause(s) of SIDS remain unknown, and it is possible that SIDS may have a number of causes, not just one. We cannot predict which babies will die, nor can we prevent all SIDS deaths. Therefore, we must continue to support medical research efforts aimed at uncovering additional risk factors and underlying causes.

A lot of babies that are in a smoking environment have asthma as well.
Just another reason not to go back.

Re: Sorry to post here - re: Question about smoking...

Just another point of view for you.
I quit the minute I found out I was pg. I did not smoke at all the whole time I was pg. I had no plans to go back to smoking at all. When dd was 4 weeks old, she started crying and did not stop until she was about 10 weeks.
I started smoking again to save my sanity- going outside for a minute in the quiet helped me collect myself for the next round.
That being said, I am ashamed of myself for going back. DH also smokes and never quit, so knowing he had cigarettes in his pocket was very tempting.
We do not smoke in the house or car or anywhere near her. We wash our hands and change our clothes before we hold or touch her after smoking. I know that does not make it ok, but it helps make me feel better about it.

Yup, I quit when I found out I was pregnant. So far I haven't started again, but my son is only 3 1/2 weeks old. I'm hoping not to go back. I honestly think, though, that if I wasn't bf'ing I probably would have started again already.

I quit the day I found out I was pregnant. I tried to quit so many other times before that and it never worked. I always know that the only way I would quit was when I got pregnant. Well this past February was 2 years!Chat Icon I am shocked myself that I never went back.
