Need advice ladies...

Not sure if anyone has followed my story over on TTC but DH & I have been trying for 8 months now with no success. Of course my cycles range from 30-33 days so they are not so regular.

After the last month of TTC & coming up with AF in the end, DH & I are ready to take the next step. I am not sure if I should consult a RE first or go to the OBGYN & get some tests done & then decide.

Background: I was seeing a OBGYN for many years & we were going to start an infertility workup but my OBGYN left the practice & is now at a OBGYN that doesn't cover my insurance. I never saw a new OBGYN but have one in mind. I am just not sure if they will do the same or tell us to wait the year before going to a RE

Any advice???

Re: Need advice ladies...

Do you have a PPO? If so, I would head straight to the RE - going to your ob/gyn for a workup may end up being a huge waste of time and effort, and if you have the luxury of a PPO, why not take it directly to a fertility expert?

That's what I did.

I would go to an RE if you dont need a referral. How old are you? As you know, that's a factor of course. If you're around the same age as Jason, you're under 35 and the rule of thumb usually is to TTC for a year before seeing an RE, and over 35 is 6 months. But honestly, if you insurance covers it, I'd just go for it.

Lots of luck to you. We're always here if you have questions Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wanted to add that, that rule of thumb is bullsh....don't wait a year...I waited two months - had a gutt feeling something was wrong (at 31 took actions into my own hands) and thank God we got tested because I would have waisted a year for nothing...since we are dealing with MF only we now have a plan and are on our way of becoming parents (God willing), so don't waste time and go the RE!!!! Re: Need advice ladies...

We do have the luxury of not needing referrals...I am 28 years old but feel that even though rule of thumb is that you should wait a year, nothing is happening for us & we are using OPK's & all. Last month we did the BD right on the mark & even used preseed.

I guess I am going to call the RE then & proceed that way...

I think this is the right thing to do although I don't think your cycles are that erratic at 3 days apart-or is that a typo? They will probably do blood tests on you(these need to be done CD 3) and ask for a sample from your DH. You are better off starting now..GL!

On a normal basis they are 30-33 days but I have had cycles of 46 & 42! So I have no clue. The bad thing, I am at CD3 now & that means the bloodwork will wait another month, I guess. DH is all onboard about the SA. He wants to know just as much as me on what is up! I am feeling overwhelmed with this & never thought we would have to do this, but at the same time, I can't wait another 3 months & deal with the "not knowing"

Since you are on CD 3 today I would call your regular OB and ask for the scrip for BW to be called in so you can do it today. If there is one thing I can say about IF/TTC, almost always waiting is a bad idea-you never know what can happen with insurance, jobs, etc. I'm sure OP's can attest to this.

I think it's a good idea to head straight to the RE. I agree with Melissa- call the doctor's office and ask for a script for CD3 bloodwork. Then call a RE and make an appt. Good luck, Kristen!Chat Icon

I am under 35 and only waited 6 months to see a RE. I don't believe in the 1 year wait for those who are well informed on how to get pg and have been timing BD right. The truth is that most people I know and see on the pg board of this site, get pg fairly quickly (less than 6 months).

Re: Need advice ladies...

Please go to an RE !!!!...I unfortunately "wasted" 7 months with an OBGYN that was recomended to me , I got comfortable with him and he had me on Clomid/Timed BD and never even monitered me properly...I didnt realize it until I switched to an RE how much of a specialty field it really is...I ended up pg after just 3 cycles with them and have now returned to them to try for #2...My feeling is , no matter what your age if you think that there "might" be an issue- at least speak to an RE and see what they say...Good Luck to you in whatever you decide Chat Icon

Re: Need advice ladies...

I say call an RE as well... there is no sense starting at a new OBGYN when you might have to go to an RE anyway.
