It's legal to own a gun -
I wouldn't want one in the house if I had children, but, many many people do -
This is bit extreme, but rather than pretending it's not there, isn't it better that a child be taught the safety and responsibility of it? - I'd 'hope' that kid would be safer with something like that in the house than the kid who just stumbled upon it and had no clue about it -

Re: Impressive or Frightening
there is a difference teaching your children gun safety, and teaching them how to strip it down, reconstruct it, and **** it.
and if there are AK's just strewn about for unsuspecting children to come up, well then we have more problems here than we think.
In light of the exploding gun violence with mass murders, I just can't sit and watch that for the pure skill value.

Re: Impressive or Frightening
To me, it's only frightening because it appears to be a game for fun rather than a serious act. Her age does not bother me.
While I've never had the occasion to shoot an automatic rifle, I would not be afraid to do so.
I've known how to handle and respect a gun since I was 9. My father, a veteran and a previous NRA member, taught my siblings and myself how to shoot rifles and pistols in a firing range.
As a result, I no longer had that curiosity that children had and knew that the only acceptable place to handle those weapons were in an approved facility.
However. I was faced with a potential home invasion when I was home alone at 15 and was able to get the key to the rack, unlock it, get a rifle, load it, and use it to scare off a would-be intruder. Luckily, I never had to point it or place my finger on the trigger. But he was long gone by the time the police showed up.
I think RESPONSIBLE gun education and safety can be a valuable lesson for children. As an adult, I would not shy away from holding or shooting a gun, and have done so quite a few times.

Re: Impressive or Frightening
Greenie's post made me realize my whole feeling about this goes back to my feelings about the "right to bear arms"
I know there are many responsbile gun owners out there.
I still don't think anyone should be able to own one.
especially a gun like that.

Re: Impressive or Frightening
I agree with what Ophelia said. I think it is frightening on many levels. I am sad that people feel they need guns like that and that they have access to them. Even if that kid was trained in gun safety, accidents still happen. What if she thought it was not loaded, but it was? What if her friend came over and wasn't so safe with it? What if she thought there was an intruder, but it was really her little brother getting a glass of water in the night? The girl is 11. She is not capable of fully weighing the consequences and the gravity of handling a dangerous weapon like that.
It also bothered me that the kid seemed very approval seeking from the man filming and that is the "talent" he is choosing to reinforce.

Re: Impressive or Frightening
AR's are in a class by themselves as far as I'm concerned. My father was an armed guard for a lot of years and thus always had a pistol. Although no one in my family is a hunter, we did have rifles too.
But automatic rifles, that's a different kind of shooter. The only people I've ever known who had them considered themselves "enthusiasts" but were also the ones putting out watermelons and such and having a good old time watching them get shredded.
Which, don't get me wrong, can be fun in the right environment. But you don't need something with that much power to do it. Typically, they get the power in their veins and keep getting more and more power out of some obsession. This is where I get nervous because it's more about how the gun makes you FEEL.

Re: Impressive or Frightening
I live in the south, Texas to be specific. I can't say that I am in support of complete gun control where owning a gun is illegal. However, I do live in the state where having a gun strapped across the back window of your pickup is fairly normal. The same truck that is barrelling down a 6 lane highway at 80 MPH. I believe that gun control should be more strictly monitored and enforced.
I have been to a gun range and I have shot both pistols and rifles. While I am crack shot and can hit the bullseye with ease, that "skill" would not be the same as shooting at a person to save your own life.

Impressive! Don't make fun of my new neighbors...they are allowed to shoot if you step on their property. It is the law here.
