i still think its RIDICULOUS that a car/SUV/whatever that gets 21. TWENTY ONE. miles per gallon is celebrated as the "green car of the year". what a joke.
(and really, i'm not a tree hugger or green activist, but even i think that's ridiculous).

Re: spinoff- Top 10 most fuel efficient SUV's and pickups
Here's another bit of info I found:
The new hybrid-electric Saturn Vue will leapfrog models like the Toyota Highlander hybrid to become the world’s most fuel-efficient V6 SUV when it goes on sale late this year or early in 2009, General Motors promises.
Saturn hasn’t revealed final fuel economy figures, but early tests have shown a 60% improvement in city fuel economy and nearly 50% on the highway. The mileage improvements Saturn insiders talk about would work out to 25-26 m.p.g. in the city and around 34 m.p.g. on the highway.
The 2009 model will be the first small SUV to use the powerful new hybrid system GM unveiled in its large SUVs and pickups last year. GM plans to offer the system in a wide range of cars, SUVs and trucks.
The Vue will be able to travel on electric power alone at speeds up to around 25 m.p.g., and the combination of V6 and the powerful two-mode hybrid system will allow it to tow up to 3,500 pounds.
The key to GM’s claim to fuel-efficiency leadership comes from the two-mode system’s ability to improve highway fuel economy more than conventional hybrids do.
The Vue will probably fall short of the Highlander hybrid’s 27-m.p.g. city rating, but much higher highway fuel economy should give the Saturn a multi-m.p.g. advantage in combined driving.
Saturn has not announced prices for the new hybrid. The brand will continue to offer a less powerful hybrid system in a lower priced model of the Vue.

Do any of these cars have an option where you can drive 2WD but turn on the 4WD only when needed, like in the rain or snow?

Not really. A regular fueled Tahoe with 4WD is in that price range, if not more.

Just the fact that you have a 2nd differential lowers gas mileage. 2WD vehicles always get better mpg than 4WD, even if the 4WD is an on-demand system. The extra components are also heavy, so the vehicle has to carry more weight.

I understand what you're saying but I think it was titled the Green Vehicle of the Year b/c of the steps forward they're making with full sized SUVs. Getting 21mpg in a V8 engine like that all while maintaining the towing capacity is unheard of.
I think it's a step in the right direction and if it get more publicity and people start buying this type of full sized SUV it could just be the beginning of better gas mileage for a vehicle that size...

My Honda CRV is AWD and I cannot switch to an 2WD.
Most true 4x4 have the option.
I have the same gas mileage as my Dodge Intrepid.

I know what you're saying. But, I think it was the technology that was applauded more than anything else.
I can understand that. I guess i just feel like it makes people think that they're doing the right thing by buying it, when most don't even need something that size, yet they'll feel justified
