I'm sorry. My SIL is going through the same thing, my brother was supposed to be off for Christmas day and then some a-hole did something to pizz off the Captain. Since nobody will admit to it, nobody in his pct is getting vacation or personal time until they find out who it is. It sux how one idiot ruins it for other people.

I am used to it. This year I have DH here for Xmas Day & Xmas Eve. On New Year's Eve, he will start dinner with the family and then have to leave at 10 to go to work. He is a security officer for a private housing complex.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon While I don't have a DH who will be away, I grew up where my dad was NYPD and my mom was a nurse and they always had to work holidays. It sucked, but somehow they managed to have at least one of them home for us.

I know what you mean...you know DH is a PO but now he is out here in Nassau and low man on the pole again...he is working days now 7am -7pm and is working through Christmas Day and both New Years EVE and day..lonely but I guess it is what we deal with too!! Sorry since you have your beautiful daughter this year too! I will be going through it next year as I am due in June..Best of Luck and enjoy the holidays! It pays to have a good support system just like family and friends to get your through the holidays!Chat Icon

My DH usually works part of the holiday but, for now, I believe he has it completely off this year but, has to work New Years (he's FDNY).

It's hard to not have him around on holidays - but I find it worse on regular weekends since I have my family to spend it with still at least. I think that feeling will change though when we have kids.

DH is on call for holidays from now on. This year, he has off for Christmas but will have to work Easter, 4th of July and next Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm not looking forward to next year but hopefully our parents will fly out to be with us for at least one of those holidays.

FIL was a fireman. He would always switch shifts if there was a new dad scheduled for the Christmas shift. Chat Icon
The years that he worked on Christmas, DH, MIL and BIL would get up at 4am to open presents with him and have breakfast before he left for work.

Is there a chance that maybe he wont have to go in???

On the bright side, you will have both families with you, so you guys wont be alone...

DH works for the LIRR and he'll be around but just really late in the day on Christmas Eve (8pm) and then he starts work at 2pm on Christmas day.

He'll be home for Christmas Eve, but only because Monday's are his usual day's off. He's in TV production. We still don't know about NYE (they asked him to work, but he might not have to)

Right with ya. I have him for a bit, so I'm lucky but it does it make it harder to even plan out travelling for the holiday.

DH is FDNY. He is working on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at 6pm. We are hosting Christmas Day for 20 at our house and we are just having everyone earlier...

Hey D- you know I know how you feel. Fortunately DH will be here for Christmas this year, but now that he was just transferred he is back at the bottom of the list for vacation pics next year so I doubt he will be hear for the holidays. Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone not have DW/DH there for holiday?

DH is working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, NYE and New Years Day. But what really makes it stinky, we won't know the hours he's working until the day before.
Low man on the totem pole at LIRR and he has to pay his dues.
