Spinoff on the Great Neck threads..it's all relative

Did you ever sit back and think that it is really all relative? When I was in law school, a bunch of us were discussing where we grew up. Most of the my classmates were from Pa. One of my classmates, explained that even though her family was poor when she was a kid, they lived in a very snobby area. She then said that one girl in her class even showed up to prom in a limo. OMG--I did not think I was from a snobby area of LI but I do have to say that whoever did NOT show up to prom in a limo certainly stood out from the crowd.

Maybe no matter where you live, there will always be an area that is even more snobby and there will be some kids who can't keep up with the Joneses, some who do not care, and there will be the Joneses.

and, its SO funny, because on that thread, someone said something about being looked down on for "only wearing Gap jeans"... meanwhile, i remember one saturday morning when my dad woke me up and we snuck out and he took me to the mall to buy an outfit at Gap... he said that he had been putting some money aside so that i could have something "nice".


I thought Gap was kind of a big deal. Guess it is all relative.

Does anyone remember when the GAP sold Levis? I do. Then again I am almost as old as Christmas.

I couldn't agree with this statement more!

I grew up going to a Manhattan private school, where you have to go through those competitive interviews and you should have seen some of the people I went to school with. The kids of the who's who of NYC.

When I moved to Chappaqua, NY (ranked one of the highest median salaries in the country, top public school in the nation- let alone the state, home to the Clintons), everyone told me it would be snobby and horrible. But I have lived here 3+ years and don't see it at all. Compared to how I grew up, this is child's play. Many Lexus' not Ferraris/Porches, houses limited in size by the housing board, one parent at least works and work hard for their $$ at that. No one here that I have met just walks into Burberry/Gucci and drops thousands on a whim.
I also think that truly snobby people would send their children to private schools because the public schools would be beneath them.... Most of those people would be raising their children in Manhattan, if they could.
Lastly and most importantly, It is big enough for my child to find her niche and place.

Funny i thought the same thing. Gap jeans were certainly not an option for me as a child b/c my mom was not a fan of labels and things that cost "too much".

Just an FYI..GAP and stores like H&M have carved out their own niche. Now they are chic and now and hip. Back then, they weren't so much.

I went to private school we all had to wear the same thing yet kids still found a way to pick on others. If you had short sleeve shirts you were not as cool as the people with long sleeve shirts, if you had tights you did not look as nice as the girls in knee socks even stupid things like a button down collar made you uncool.

I have a friend that never got over herself. She will say she likes my shirt and then ask where it is from if I say Marshalls, Target or a store she believes that is beneath her she suddenly doesn't like my shirt anymore. No matter where you live or where you go to school the I'm better than you attitude will always exist.

I worry about this because I'm moving to Plainview..I like the area a lot, but have heard this could happen..the reality is..I also hear that there are people who are NOT like that...I am convincing myself that how we raise our kids is what's important and we picked the area because we like it, and the house we are buying, and the school district.

I grew up in a housing project in Queens and had more money than most of the other kids I was in school with and I was still teased..I learned that if kids are going to tease you, it's because you have some kind of charisma...either you use it as a leader or you get picked on for it..I got picked on..haha...goes to show that it doesn't matter where you live to be teased...it's how we teach our kids to deal with it that's important!
