I never thought of this. I just put the nativity scene under the tree to celebrate the "occasion", not the actual timing.

For us it is about keeping a tradition alive that meant so much to me when I was little.

My parents really felt it was important for us to understand that Christmas was a celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior. So each night in December we would read a little bit of the Gospel. We would read about Gabriel speaking to Mary and about her blessing. We would read about the travels and troubles of following the star.. but we never got to the bit about Jesus being born until after Midnight Mass. We would come home and my father would say "REJOICE! The newborn babe is born!" with so much joy in his voice and eyes. And we would make a big deal out of putting the baby in the manger. I remember that I grew up knowing that this holiday was about WAY more than trees and lights and presents - the biggest thrill I got was from knowing that Christ was born on Christmas Day. And I guess I want my kids to feel the same way. I hope that they get half the thrill I got.

I know it's goofy - but maybe you had to be there. Chat Icon

Not goofy at all. That's a great tradition.

i think that is so beautiful! we had similar traditions - except we went to mass in the morning.

people find it shocking to hear but on Christmas morning we would wake up early. . .to go to mass - THEN wait for family THEN eat Christmas dinner. . .only then would we open presents because that wasn't what Christmas was about. I hope to continue that tradition with my children.

Not goofy at all. I can understand the tradition. We used to only set up the tree, etc.. a few days before Christmas until the Epiphany. We celebrated the whole time with little Jesus during that time knowing that Christmas day was extra special.
