Your DH was probably going to be okay to drive BUT cops were on a MISSION this holiday weekend. He could've ended up in jail instead of at the airport.
But of course the worst case scenario is much worse if he really was NOT ok to drive.
The friend will get over it. Tell DH to blame you and let you be the bad guy.
yes this is kind of what i thought. dh is a big guy and he was by no means falling all over the place drunk. he is responsible and has called a taxi or made other arrangements for us to get home safely if we were out together. he has even hidden keys from friends so they would be forced to sleep over at our apt. i don't want people to think my annoymous lol husband is a drunk. i think this could have gone either way really. he would have been okay to drive but not driving was just a much better option for peace of mind and safety i was glad he didn't.
my DH deals with ALOT of DWI cases... majority of them were not falling over drunk, and all thought they were fine because they only had a few beers. People think because they fall asleep for a few hours that the alcohol magically disappears from their system. I've tested with the breathalizer the morning after a night of drinking, and STILL put up numbers. you did the right thing.

You did the right thing. I would call the friend and explain at a later time just to make sure there are no hard feelings. If there are hard feelings, then the friend isn't that good of a friend.

he was first making his transport arrangements 6 hours in advance? What was his plan if your DH didn't offer? that's what I was thinking too

Re: Your Opinion
JMO I honestly think it was a bit much to tell him he shouldn't drive. I think after 6 beers and a shot and 4 1/2 hrs later he def would have been fine to drive. I actually don't even think that is a lot to drink.
But on a side note. Good for you for sticking up for what you believe in.

it still would have been in his system... whether he would have 'felt' fine enough to drive is irrelevant. A blood alcohol content doesn't take your feelings into account.

You did the right thing - any friend who cannot understand the safety implications involved here really isn't such a good friend after all.

there's really nothing to debate. The question isn't whether or not someone feels alright enough to drive 4 hours after drinking that amount. All that matters is that if he got pulled over and had to take a breathalizer, it would not have been .00- which is the legal limit in NY.

I think you were right. and seriously- the friend- they had to go to the airport and left it up to that day to figure it out- at a party where people were drinking? call a cab, that's just stupid.

I think they changed that to .08 and depending on his weight, size of drink and the time he actually stopped drinking it probably would have been lower than that.

sorry- you're right about the .08. But, on Thanksgiving weekend and only 4 hours later, i still think it would be an unnecessary risk, and when i think about having to drive on nights like that, i HATE thinking about how other drivers *think* they're okay to drive when they're really not. And 4 hours later, it would not have been out of his system.

i have to agree with this. six beers and a shot is a lot of alcohol - and even for a"big" guy, who was eating, he still could have had anywhere from .02 to .06 BAC after 4 1/2 hours. everyone's metabolism is different, even depending on the DAY. i am GLAD she put her foot down on this one. IMO it is JUST NOT WORTH IT.

Re: Your Opinion
i wouldnt have let my DH drive after 6 beers and a shot. and i think his friend should have realized it would have been a bad idea for your DH to drive him so quickly after having so many drinks. he shouldnt have been upset IMO. he should've thought about his friends safety and taken a cab.

Re: Your Opinion
I TOTALLY disagree that it was your responsibility to find this freind another ride, especially to pay for it. But if I was the friend, I would be a little miffed that your DH didn't try harder to get in touch with me. But asking someone who is drinking, the night before... irresponsible.

If he were okay to drive, then he wouldn't end up in jail. He'd only have ended up in jail if he were over the legal limit... and honestly, if he were driving over the legal limit, jail would be the appropriate place.

There was a girl on Oprah not that long ago who got in a horrible accident while driving to work or school or something the morning after a night out drinking. She was still over the legal limit, though she felt totally fine. Clearly, she wasn't.
No doubt your DH did the right thing by NOT driving... and it was irresponsible of his friend to ask him to drive so soon after drinking...

Re: Your Opinion
Dont think all the blame should be on you though. IMO DH probably would have been fine to drive. However, if at 10pm he knew he had to drive his friend to the airpoint at 4:30a.m. why didnt he just stop drinking??? That is HIS fault, not YOURS

Well if it makes you feel better a friend of mine's brother drove her and her husbandf to the airport the DAY after she got married. They left the house at 6am. Guess who got a DUI for too much wedding celebration?

Your Dh's friend is a big boy. Let him take a cab. You were 100% right. You said you had a "feeling"-there is a lot to be said about a woman's intuition.
