Anybody ever use The Geek Squad??
Our computer has gotten a virus and it is driving us nuts. Best Buy contracts them out and it looks like their prices start at $159!! If they are good, then I won't mind but I don't want the same problem happening again.

They will just run a virus scan and if that doesn't work, they erase your hard drive which you can do yourself. Not worth the money.

Re: Anybody ever use The Geek Squad??
I brought my laptop to them last year because of a virus and they cleaned up everything! It was a bit $$$ but worth it.
ETA: It was also something we tried to fix ourselves and were unable to do. If you've exshusted trying to do it yourself it's worth it imo.

yup--we brought them a computer from my office--they claimed they would "back up" everything (for $199!!) and then they'd 'fix' the virus issue. turns out all they did was format the entire hard drive , erase everything, and there was an "error" in backing up all the files.
they suuuuuuck and i hate them

Re: Anybody ever use The Geek Squad??
Yes and I would never use them again. My brother has a company in UK doing the same thing. Not only did Geek Squad leave our computer in a mess, that thankfully my brother was able to sort out eventually when he came to NY to visit but they charged me $450 to do so, I would never use them again and I wouldn't recommend them either. My Brother and his employees were astounded at not only what we were charged but the shabby work that was done. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole

It's very easy to do...
First back up everything on a flashdrive or cd's.
Then you should have the disk from Dell that will erase the harddrive...like it was brand-new. The CD is marroon/red and says "System Restore" of Systems CD. When you load that, follow directions. It will erase your hard drive and make it like new.
You will have to reinstall all your programs like office and whatnot.

I used them. I took my old laptop to them they said I needed a new hard drive. It worked for half a second and it then I needed a new mother board. I gave up and bought a new laptop. Not a fan.

yup... it's the reinstalling programs that can be time consuming. Just make sure you back up everything because it's going to erase it all to.
Have you tried doing a virus scan while disconnected from the internet? Some virus will automatically reinstall or hide themselves when the scan is trying to get rid of them so you need to be disconnected.

Re: Anybody ever use The Geek Squad??
you shouldn't have to pay for something as simple as virus / spyware contamination....
download all the latest updates, get off the internet and run a couple good antispyware programs.... you can get free antispyware programs online.
Then run a good / current antivirus, and I bet your computer will be back to normal.
Unless you have a really vicious worm, there's no need to be so radical to reformat your harddrive. (if you DO end up reformatting, make sure you use a backed up version PRIOR to the infection... otherwise you'll also re-install the problem, if you copy the whole harddrive back onto your newly re-formatted drive )

Re: Anybody ever use The Geek Squad??
You should try it yourself first, what have you got to lose? If it doesn't work, then you can bring it to someone anyway.
Some viruses have required a lot of time for me to remove. Disabling XP's system restore, removing registry entries, running scans and removals... And some have been as simple as the program removing it on it's own.
There's no way to know unless you try. Make sure you save your "My Documents" folder and any folders you may have created and saved files to. Including digital pictures.
Also, don't forget save your internet explorer favorites (File... Import and Export), your emails, and take a screenshot of your programs list. You can do that by pressing your Print Screen button (probably to the top right of your keyboard) and then going into Microsoft Word and pasting it in there.
Good luck... I know it can be expensive and annoying. If you do decide to ask a geek for a favor, like the IT person at work, don't assume they'll say yes or it's going to be free. We get hit up for this constantly and it can be extremely time consuming. Which is why I stopped doing it for anyone other than immediate family a loooong time ago.
Good luck with it!

Re: Anybody ever use The Geek Squad??
I would just go online and use several free anti-virus programs. (No anti-virus/anti-adware program gets 100%) Odds are, you'll be able to fix it yourself.
System restore won't do anything. It just rolls back some of the Windows drivers. It doesn't actually restore your system to an older date. If there is a virus, it will still be there.
Backing up your data, formatting your drive, and putting your data back will most likely just put the virus back on your PC.
Even if you buy Norton or McAfee, it will still be much cheaper than having GS come to your house.
