We have no china at all. When we got married, we decided not to ask for it because we will literally never use it. (we're not china people) We decided we would rather get other nice gifts rather than china.
If I did ask for china though, I'd probably have asked for a setting of 8.

I think we have 8, or maybe it's 12....16?? I really have no idea, they're in the cabinet over the fridge and we haven't used the China yet!!!
We didn't get full settings tho, just the large plate, small plate, and silverware. No cups, suacers, etc.

 That's us too.
I asked DH if he thought we should get extras when ours was on sale at Macy's & he said yes because we break everything, and they he asked how many we had--I said 12, and then he said that 12 was extra, since we would never have that many people over at once! He has a point. . .

NO idea how this happened, as we only registered for 12 place settings... but we received 16. 
Clearly people were either buying it elsewhere or not taking it off the registry. I have to go return some and get something else we wanted instead...
I would hold onto those extra place settings. You'd be surprised how handy they can be. Pieces break, sometimes you'll have a larger party over... You just don't know.

i didn't register for it.
i have 12 place settings of our everyday dishes though - i leave 8 in the cabinet and have 4 in storage boxes in a closet.
