I need your help with the Den

Do I keep these shelves.....rip them out...paint them? We need to decide soon because we are putting hardwood floors in. We are also getting rid of the hideaous light fixture....closing the hole where the AC is and putting in hi-hats. Also what color would you suggest painting the room?

Edited to add that the coal stove is being removed also and te fireplace will be turned back into a fireplaceChat Icon

I'd personally keep the shelves - they add character to the room. Maybe paint them, then?

Are you going to be using the room as a den or something else? If you're going to have lots of books then I'd keep the shelves but lose the cabinets under them. Paint them a lighter color or strip and stain them lighter. If not rip them out, open up the room a little.

i completely agree

i love the look of a wall of books.. but if you don't really have anything to fill the shelves, it might be better to get rid of them

either way, the cabinets need to go!

edited to say that if you keep the shelves, it would look nice if you painted the room a darker color, then painted the shelves a lighter accent color.. something like that

I don't think I can take the cabinets out without taking the selves out too.

I would paint the cabinets white, and i would get a nicer mantal to frame out the fireplace.

Re: I need your help with the Den

We had the same thing in our den, we ripped them out. There was no way to get rid of the cabinets and not the shelves. It really opened up the room getting rid of them.

I paint them white, it will change the whole look of the room. Paint the rest of the trim white too. Also cutting them down so they are flat on top just above the height of the widow on the left instead of following the vaulted ceiling & then adding crown moulding across the top of them would make them look like awesome builtins that are more todays style.

I would keep the shelves, prime and paint them white and change out the mantle and paint that white as well. It will change the look of the whole room. I would go for a nice warm wall like BM Springfield Tan. If you decide to do a flatscreen over your fireplace the cabinets will be great for hiding boxes etc.

I was also going to say that the cabinets might be good for al of your DVD's, etc.

I agree with Kelly, paint the trim and the built-ins white.
