Renting a small UHAUL is so worth it.
yep we did did this. We rented I think it was a medium one it cost 20 or 30 to rent, and then it was 1.89 per mile.
Yup rented one last weekend and it moved ALOT of BIG a$$ furniture. I'm talking a dining room set w/a ginormous china cabinet and six chairs, a two piece wall unit, a oversized stuffed chair and ottoman, boxes and bins of assorted crap, a desk, chair and armoire, etc. It was a 17 ft truck and drove down the block like a Sherman tank!

Re: Apt moving - did anyone rent a UHAUL?
The last time we moved, we rented a small UHaul and my experience wasn't as positive as everyone else's.
Advice first, then a story... Check out the place you're renting from. Get a good recco or go there yourself, look at the trucks, make your decision then. And get all the details on charges so you know what exactly you're paying.
We found a UHaul place online in Island Park and ordered it sight unseen. Mistake.
When we got to the place, it was surrounded by junkyards, oil tanks, abandoned cars and garbage everywhere. But what could we do? We needed it.
The guy just had us sign something and handed us the keys. Didn't really tell us anything else.
The truck was filthy, loud, it stank of burning oil, the seatbelts didn't tighten, the heat didn't work well and when it did, it blew the oil smell into our faces and was so loud, we couldn't hear ourselves talk. We drove with the heat on and the windows open so we didn't asphyxiate.
So I get on the Loop Parkway, get to the Meadowbrook, and start heading north to East Meadow where my apartment was. About 200 yards from the first bridge, I realize the stupidity of what I was doing. I didn't know the height of the truck and if it would fit under all the low bridges!
Good thing I knew side streets to get up to East Meadow without taking the parkway. The rest of the day went on without incident, but after paying for the truck, filling it with gas, and paying for mileage, it turned out to be a lot more expensive than I originally thought.
The house we're going to contract on this week is way below our budget, so we're springing for a Pod. It's about $500. but to us, it's worth it to not have to go through that again.
