So overwhelming - long

I had my first appointment with an RE today. For the past few months I have been going to my regular ob/gyn who did some testing and prescribed clomid, etc. I wasnt really feeling I was getting the information/ focus I needed, so I made an appointment with an RE.

The first thing that the RE asks is whether I have insurance, and when I told him that I do have insurance and that it does cover infertility (up to $25K lifetime), he shows me a chart of methods of conceiving (iui, ivf, etc.), percentages of pregnancy through that method, and costs. Since I have insurance, he says I should go to ivf right away.

I am 26 years old, and my husband and I have been trying for 20 months, I am anovulatory, have had luck with clomid in ovulating. Should I really jump straight to ivf, and potentially blow through the insurance coverage very quickly? new doctor?

I thought I would ask you guys since you have so much experience and wisdom. Thanks.

Im very confused (and dizzy from all of the blood that they took).

Thats up to you. IUI, to me increases your chances only by 2 or 3% for DH's with normal sperm counts and mobility. You are young. Have you been tested for PCOS? Do they know why you are not ovulating? I would have those questions answered before I went straight to IVF. You could probably get a few IVF's out of that level of benefits. IVF is a huge strain on your body and I would think carefully before I did it.

I haven't been to see an RE yet, but I would not want to go straight to IVF. Has it been determined why you are not ovulating? If not, I would want to get to the bottom of that first.

Thank you. I agree. We do not know why I am not ovulating yet, and that's why I was a little concerned that he immediately pointed to IVF within 5 minutes of meeting with me. I told him I needed to think it over/ talk with my husband.

I wouldn't jump into IVF right away...IMO IVF should be the last resort. Don't know why your dr. would reccomend that without trying to see if he can get you to ovulate on your own. Re: So overwhelming - long

I do not ovulate either, had to take the highest dose of clomid along with Metformin, and did 3 IUI's before getting pregnant. My doc was not even considering IVF for a few months. I am surprised this guy would want to go right to it. It concerns me that he just wants to suck your insurance dry (or so it seems). I would not like that, and would find new doc prob. IVF is a big step, and you may find that you need to do that, but I would take the smaller steps to get to that point.

GOOD LUCK!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: So overwhelming - long

i guess im in the minority-- i would go for IVF immediatly if i could. i went to a RE after only trying for 5 months. They found something. had i not been so aggressive i wouldnt have known about my fertility issues for several more months. i want the most aggressive options i couls take as soon as i could take them. you have been tryign for a long time. but you have to do what feels right for you. only you and your DH ( or boyfriend) will know whats best for you. if you want to try somethign llike IUI , that may help and save you lots of $$$$$.
best of luck with whatever you decide.

Re: So overwhelming - long

thanks, I thought the IVF right away was strange. We probably won't go for IVF now, I feel better. It's just too much to think through at once sometimes. Much appreciated.

Re: So overwhelming - long

why don't you get a second opinion. i don't think that would hurt to see what another re has to say. just a thought

yes, I think a second opinion would be a good idea. you may find another doctor that you are more comfortable with too.

Re: So overwhelming - long

IVF is your best bet, and finances is what stands in the way for most... so if that is not an issue than yes IVF is the quickest way.

If I were you I might try IUI a couple times, because if you ovulate and there are no other problems... heck you may get PG right away. But I wouldnt do too many before moving to IVF

Re: So overwhelming - long

I would definitely get a second opinion.

But - going straight to IVF is not a bad idea. Your odds are much better with IVF than IUI and if you have a limited budget then you also don't want to waste it.

Re: So overwhelming - long

I agree get a 2nd opinion, maybe try a couple of IUI - hey you never know and then move onto IVF if you have to.

I wish I hadn't wasted time with a Dr that I not only didn't like, but to be honest was about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Good luck Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: So overwhelming - long

I would find out why you aren't ovulating first of all.

THen I would make the decision. One thing about trying an IUI before an IVF -- your Dr. can get a better idea of how you respond to the meds.

I agree that your RE sounds like he is moving too fast. You need to find out what the problem is, and which is the best solution.

Who did you go to? Sounds like the first clinic I tried...

Good luck.

Re: So overwhelming - long

I would definetly find another doc. That is just a huge leap to male before even doing any testing.

I would also check with your insurance. We had full infertility coverage as well, but they did require 3 failed IUI's before they would pay for IVF

Good Luck

that is another red flag to me about this Dr. ALL the RE's I have seen wanted my DH there at least at the first meeting. I would consult another Dr. If you do have PCOS it is relatively easy to "fix" and you could get PG naturally with a couple of meds. You need to have a sono to check for cysts and a 2 hour glucose tolerance test(thats what my DR did for me--I do not have PCOS) You should look on ivfconnections.com Search by location and see if any of the girls on there have recommendations for a good Dr. GL!
