Help w/ top soil

What am I doing wrong here? LOL

I put top soil down around my garden last sunday. It then rained really had the next day or 2 days, whatever. Well the rain seemed to mess up the top soil and you could see the "old dirt" now in places. I thought maybe I didnt make it deep enough. So last night we put like 3 inches of more top soil on top of our new mess to make it really thick. Now what? Am I suppose to pound it down and make it flat or do we leave it all loose the way it is. I am getting so frustrated here and dont want it to get messed up when it rains again.

Everyone elses looks so good, what am I doing wrong I dont even want to start the front yard until we have a grip in the back.

Please help the helpless gardener

When we put the top soil down, we mixed it with peat moss (top soil is very dense & needs some mixing). Once it is mixed with the peat moss, we would toss it around so it leveled out the beds. With all the rain, we have not had a problem..

if you don't move it around, you are going to eventually see the old dirt bc you didn't mix it in with the old dirt....Move it all around together

You're supposed to mix the top soil with the old stuff.
