Gun question....

If you were to own a gun and have a permit for it.
Would you tell your children you have it, or not tell them??

This is a discussion DH and I are having.

What is YOUR opinion?

Re: Gun question....

I grew up with a gun in the house (Dad is a retired cop). We always knew about the gun, my parents didn't keep it a secret at all, but we also knew we could NEVER EVER EVER touch it. It was drilled into our heads a million times. To this day, I'm too scared to even put one finger on my Dad's gun.

My husband also has a gun and I think when we have children I would handle it the same way my parents did, but in addition the gun would be locked away in a safe at all times, so even if a child got curious, they wouldn't be able to get to it.

My feeling is if you don't tell kids about it, they'll they pick up bits and pieces of information anyway and that is creating a dangerous curiousity. If you are straightforward about it, explain how extremely dangerous guns are and allow them to see it, ask questions etc. AND always keep it locked away, you are much better off.

This is exactly how DH feels, Im starting to lean towards that feeling.
I guess if you dont tell them and they find it and get curious...something bad might happen.

same situation, except instead of cop, my dad was in the military.

I plan on handling it the same way my parents did.

I agree. I also think I have a right to know if any home my child visits has a gun and whether it is locked up.

My dad was NYPD and we grew up with him having guns in the house. We all knew he had them, where he kept them and that we were never to touch (they were locked with a combination lock when at home).

While I myself would never have a gun in my house unless it was part of my job, I would most certainly teach my children about the dangers of it. I think that the unknown will cause children to be curious.

my husband collects historical military rifles & we have a few shotguns.
we do not have a license because it isn't needed. Our children(teenagers) know about the guns, they have both been taugh gun safety. The gun safe is built into the house & securely locked, each gun has an additional lock, some arent even assembled & can't be fired. 99% of the ammo is not stored with the guns.
I think "secrets" regarding firearms are just accidents waiting to happen.

Re: Gun question....

Although I grew up in a house with many guns, I have very strong feelings about not having one in my house now. Children are curious and frankly I just don't trust any child to not be a little too curious one day ... things happen. My brothers go to the range every weekend, and I have a young nephew that is being taught to shoot at what I consider a very early age. I just don't like it. I would NEVER and I mean NEVER leave my kids at my siblings house alone because of the guns ... and they are all locked up. I've been called overprotective ... controlling ... whatever. I know my family is very safe about their guns ... but ... I just can't get past the worry. Bravo to any parent that teaches gun safety and can sleep with one in the house ... but ... it's just not me.

Re: Gun question....

I think that if you don't tell your children that there are guns in the house, if they happen to find them, they will not know if they are a toy or not. Guns in a house should NOT be a secret.

Re: Gun question....

Dh is a SGT in NYPD...he has his service gun and his off duty gun. He usually keeps his service gun at the PCT. His off duty is sometimes at home.

obviously our children will be aware that daddy has guns because of his job...but it is going to be drilled into their heads that it is not a toy and they are not allowed to near it.

when they are around 10, I plan to tell them a true story about a friend of mine who picked up his father's service gun and accidently shot and killed his sister. my friend is 30 yrs old and this was truelly the beginning of a very difficult life for him. His father was killed a few yrs later while on duty and his mother resented him for what happened and completly mistreated him. A few yrs after that his mother died of cancer. He has been searching in all the wrong places for the unconditional love that he has never recieved. Its really very very sad. I know that his life would have been very different if he could have had a healthy relationship with his parents for the short time that they were actually in his life.

Re: Gun question....

My dad hunts - he has rifles. We knew that he had them and he kept them locked in a trunk with the rest of his equipment. We never had access to the trunk or the guns.

eta - as far as DH and I go, we haven't made the decision yet about whether or not we will eventually have a gun in our home.

Re: Gun question....

I guess we have had too many robberies and break ins in our neighborhood.
Someone broke into our car a few weeks agoa nd someone robbed the house 5 houses down from us, and 2 other break ins the next block over.
Now just this past week a giuy broke into a house in Coram not too far from us and the woman shot him with a shotgun (which I would never have)

It scares me with my little boys......Im a little scared of having a gun, I would rather have a baseball bat at the door..which I do. This is a little discussion DH and I are having.

pretty much the same thing...

my mom used to read us these special police books for kids about how guns are never to be touched, etc. and now that my brother is a cop too we got those types of books for my nephew- it even has a little jingle in the book that my nephew memorized...

something about if you see a gun- go and get an adult immediately- never, ever touch it, etc.

so, my nephew knows and my brother keeps it locked in a fire-proof steel safe with a special code that he changes once in a while... my dad did the same thing. HTH Chat Icon

for that, the best BEST thing you can do is get a house alarm.... did you ever watch "it takes a thief?" they go over how important it is to have an alarm- i don't feel safe w/o my house alarm. i arm it all the time and i'm SURE the second that LOUD thing sounds any robber would RUN knowing that the police are immediately alerted, knowing that there's this REALLY LOUD sound drawing attention to our house and to him/her, etc.

i would be too nervous having a gun for that type of thing- if something happens quickly and you have it in a safe, where it belongs, then it's going to be very difficult for you to go and get it- and then, in the heat of the moment- to go and shoot someone? yikes, i don't know if i could do it under pressure and i would be nervous about him wrestling it away from me and shooting me and my kids!

i would get a house alarm-- WELL WORTH it. any time it has gone off by accident- the people call within like TEN seconds and the police just automatically come- one time, a cop was there SO fast i didn't even have the thing turned off yet and he was at my door...

i opened the door and said it was just a mistake and he said "ok ma'am, can i just come in anyway to make sure?" so i said "yeah, umm, sure" and then he explained to me afterwards that he has had people holding guns to people's heads BEHIND the door and have told them "just tell the cop to go away" so he checked just to be safe! i was like wow

Re: Gun question....

Growing up ( maybe from 9 on-I honestly do not remember) I knew my father had a gun in the house- however it was hidden and locked up and I had NO clue where it was until I got much older-only because I saw him move it somewhere else and I was not suppossed to-

I do not think Dh and I will ever have a gun in the house anyway
