We just drove through there 2 weekends ago. I honestly could find nothing wrong with it. Very few un-updated houses, very well maintained overall, great shopping closeby.

my gf is looking in the stonybrook, setauket and now st james area and asking me about the towns but I dont know anything about them.
like school district
safe town
stuff like that she was asking me

Definitely safe. it's a good area to live and a good school district. it is right next to smithtown. Small, but cute.

I grew up in Setauket
St James is very similar
except Smithtown schools- which on par with 3 Village
you can't go wrong with any of those towns

DH is from St James, I am originally from Smithtown - I would LOVE to live in either town. They are safe, good school district, great shopping near by (Smithhaven Mall/Lake Grove area plus town of St James), restaurants, activities for kids - really just a great area.
ETA: Only downfall is HIGH taxes.

I live in St. James, origionally from Kings Park. I love it!! Has a great small town feel! It is a village so it has it's own water authority which is nice with the bills!!!

Its a really nice area -
the only negative I found was that - IMO - it takes more than average amount of time to get to a highway in the morning. Rt. 111 & Rt. 25A are the main ways to get out of the developments - and they are really backed up with traffic during the rush hours.

I love St. James! If I could afford it, I would be back there in a heartbeat. It's one of those towns that you know your neighbor and everyone is happy!

Great towns. I grew up in South Setauket, went to 3 Village Schools (Arrowhead, Murphy, Ward Melville).
My mom lives in St.James-cute town-too expensive for us.

I grew up in Smithtown, and DH grew up in St. James. It is a wonderful town! I would love to buy a house in St. James. The schools are good, the neighborhoods are safe and very nice. It really is a great area to live and raise a family.
