i honestly believe that even if you tried to evacuate most people would never be able to make it off the island. Imagine a friday rush hour traffic multiplied by 50 Chat Icon

I agree - may be safer staying behind.

I totally agree with this

Me too. For some reason, the image I have of this is like that Stephen King book/movie "The Stand"

Anywhere -- brother in Boston, sister in Vermont, hotel in bumfu*k....

I think it is selfish to stay when evacuation is ordered...you put the lives of rescuers in danger because of your own stubbornness or whatever you want to call it....

I think I would leave as soon as they started talking about possible evacuation. I woul dtake both of our SUVs and load them up with everything we could (photos, the cat, etc) and get off Long Island til the coast was 100% clear.

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated

I would pack my pets and get the hell out of here- wouldnt have to ask me twice so I would get out early to try and beat the craziness- or we would use the boat , we are docked on the north shore and not sure where'd we go- DH would though.
My mom is an RN and she was saying to yesterday she wonders if she would be mandated to stay at the hospital- stonybrook- or can she be with her family- I told her be with the family- Im selfishChat Icon

I'd take the ferry up North to Boston.

Me too! It's hard enough to get out of East Hampton on a Sunday afternoon. I can't imagine trying during an evacuation.

ETA: I just realized, that I would be one of the last to leave. I'd have to wait for all of my guests to be evacuated Chat Icon

Do you run a B&B or something, or just have a lot of house-guests? Chat Icon
I'd leave if an offical evacuation was ordered, but if was just early speculation, I'm the one that always thinks everyone is over-reacting & I probably wouldn't leave right away.

If I can get a flight with all of my family, we'd head down to my parents house in FL.
I'd go the 1st or 2nd day of being "warned".

We'd leave in a heartbeat. If possible we'd fly out, if not, then we'd drive to family in another state. My sister's in Maryland being the closest.

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated

I read in the newsday the other day a few things...
1- LI would never ever ever have a Category 5 hurricane...Its 100% impossible for it to sustain itself in our waters, so its Not a fear that is real...
BUT A category 4 could happen, although they say it would be once every 500 plus years.....and yes a high end category 3 is possible and could indeed cripple the island...

2-they stated if we were faced with a cetegory 4 , LI would be 100% destrpyed and there would be NO way to get everyone out...

Thats some scary stuff, but the odds of something like Katrina are zilch, so I hope people dont needlessly live in fear..
