If Long Island was being evacuated
Would you leave or stay? If you would leave, where would you go and how would you get there (say if planes and trains weren't and option)
ETA: I would leave and go north to our house upstate - it's north of Albany so I'm pretty sure we'd be safe!

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
I'd leave - after September 11th, there's no messing around anymore. I'd drive as far away as possible from whatever danger it was. I'm lucky in that I have family everywhere. If it were just the immediate vicinity, I'd go to family in NJ. If it included them, I have a brother in Cleveland. If even that was not safe, I have a sister in Georgia...
I can go on but you get my point.

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
I would think that the magnitude in numbers of people who would pick up and leave LI would make is very very difficult for everyone to get out safely.. there are just SOO MANY more people on LI than in lets say New Orleans (or so I'd assume)
I don't live on LI, but if I did I would do anything it took to leave. If that meant just getting in a car and sitting in traffic just to get out of there, I'd rather be stuck in a car with DH than sitting in my home , waiting for impending doom

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
I would leave and wouldnt think twice. I have family all over the place, I went to college in PA and have lots of friends still there so I could stay with. I am fortunate that my job is flexible and I can leave basically whenever I want. DH's job may be another story....

I have family in Ohio and in California. Depending on why we were being evacuated I might want to go to California.. get as far away as possible!

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
If it were a mandatory evac and we were going to be under 15' of water I would, If it were a cat 2 hurricane I would probably stay after listening to how bad it could be. Im so far out on the island that a ferry would be my only real option to go.

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
i'd try to leave, but if planes and trains aren't available i'd be s.o.l. i live in manhattan and have no car. unless my family came to pick me up on their way off the island, i guess i'd have to try and get on a bus or rent a car or hitch a ride. as for where i'd go- my inlaws live in ct or we have plenty of friends in the dc area.

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
I'd leave. I's start by going to realitives house in Northern New Jersey (up above Paramus). Then if that still seemed unsafe I'd head to my friends summer house on Lake Champlain (same exit as Lake Placid). From there I don't know where or if I'd go any further.

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
I'd leave, 9/11 was too close for comfort, I live in the city and was home the that day but waiting to hear from my parents and siblings was the worst feeling.
We'd probably go upstate to my cousins or to FH's family in Ohio, I'd also be able to go to my aunt and grandma in AZ

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
Long Island would be nearly impossible to evacaute. Between the number of people and the geography and the insufficient number of bridges, it would be really hard.
This was an argument against opening Shoreham in the 80s.

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
i honestly believe that even if you tried to evacuate most people would never be able to make it off the island. Imagine a friday rush hour traffic multiplied by 50

Re: If Long Island was being evacuated
All, I know is it would be one BIG mess. Imagine the traffice...we can only go west...I have family in other states and I guess fly or drive out. It's so scary to even think about it.

I'm in Brooklyn, and if there were no planes, trains or buses, I'd be sh@t out of luck. We don't have a car. Even if we did, the traffic would be so thick we may not be able to get away from whatever it was safely. So being in our apt and waiting for rescue might be a better option, depending on the situation.
I am with you on that. I am on Staten Island, and without a car. It is gridlock here already. and everyone would have to be on a bridge to go somewhere. I would be tempted to stay in my basement.
