I am crazy
So I just worked out an entire spreadsheet, looking up basics that you need to get when having a baby, and have done research on chilcare costs, etc., so that I plan and where we would need to accomodate a change in monthly expenses.
We have not even started TTC.
God help me when we do!

Re: I am crazy
You are not crazy, just a planner. Nothing wrong with that.
Care to share what figures you came up with
We are not TTC and not planning to for at least another year. I have a few baby showers to attend in the coming weeks and a good friend had twins a few months ago. I am starting to calculate the costs of having a child too. I did not get as far as a spreadsheet but I have asked about daycare costs and the costs of the necessary baby gear (car seats, strollers, high chairs, baby furniture, formula, diapers, clothes. Some of the strollers I have seen (not on registries for my friends) are $729 up up
And of course all of that assumes insurance covers all the expenses of prental care, labor, delivery and post natal care. I need to ask a coworker (recently back from maternity leave) about how good the insurance really is at our company. My friend with the twins has great insurance. They were preemies and one is still in the hospital months later and has had numerous surgeries. So far it's not out of pocket.

Re: I am crazy
Ok-- this is what I came up with. I have posted here to ask the mommies what certain costs are etc. I also live in an urban area, right outside of Manhattan, therefore things like childcare are more expensive and I would get the $700 stroller because you just need it when you are walking a lot in an urban area. I also plan to get a baby nurse for 2 weeks after the baby is born-- costs I have for this are based on what i THINK my friend just paid someone.
Ongoing monthly baby costs for newborn/infant: Approx. $2400
This includes $2K/month for a full time nanny and an overestimation for diapers, etc.
Baby "Start Up" Costs. These are items that I assume are needed immediately. I did not factor in a high-chair, etc. because you don;t need that right away. Also-- being Jewish, we typically do not have baby showers-- and gifts are not even purchased until the baby is born-- so these are the things that Dh and I most likely would need to purchase ourselves.
Crib $700.00 (can get as cheap as $400) Changing Table $400.00 (can get as cheap as $250) Baby Nurse $2,800.00 (guessing at cost) Car Seat $200.00 Snap & Go $60.00 Stroller $800.00 Swing $120.00 Bath Tub $20.00 Glider/Rocker $300.00 Breast Pump $50.00 Pack & Play $120.00 Diaper Bag $150.00 Mattress $100.00 Bedding $250.00 Boppys $60.00 (for 2) Misc. $300.00 (bottles, etc., leaving a bunch out I am sure)
TOTAL ESTIMATED EXPENSES $6,430 (Plan for $7,000 to $8,000 to be safe; Also need to account for lost pay while on maternity)
I like to overestimate a lot of things and leave large chunks for miscellaneous stuff because I know I have probably left very important things off of this list.

Re: I am crazy
Looks good. The only thing that I could see fluctuating a bit is the FT Nanny, but I think your estimate is really good.
My cousin in Queens pays $2500 a month and my boss in NYC pays $3200 a month. I really don't know what the going rate is and how the cost is negotiated though....

Yikes-- I did a little research on UrbanBaby and from what I saw in Northern NJ-- it was about $450 to $550 a week-- it was however not an in-depth analysis.
$3200!!

Re: I am crazy
I think no matter how much planning we would do, there are always going to be hidden things that pop up. Thats the way life is. No amount of planning will ever cover the costs of raising a child 100%. That being said, I am not going to drive myself crazy. Our child will always have enough - just not a heck of a lot extra. I have to remember that I was very fortunate to have had the upbringing that I did - my parents didnt struggle. WE might just have to.

For me-- it helps me to deal with situations. I know that I can easily get overwhelmed and it helps me to feel like I have some control, taking away some of that fear of the unknown-- even though there is obviously so much unknown and things don't necessarily go according to plan when trying to have a baby. I'd rather worry about taking care of a baby-- than worrying about finances when the time comes-- I just like to be as prepared as possible.

yeah, I know. My boss is quite extravagant in every way possible, so maybe she is over paying - or lying about it!
The costs are very scary. Not sure what we'll do. Sometimes I think I want to be a SAHM, and other times I think no way. We'll have to see when the time comes and how we are doing financially.

Re: I am crazy
Thanks for posting this!!! I am also obsessing, and haven't started yet, but more in terms of the possibility of not being able to get PG. So... i didn't get as far as having a baby.. more like buying fertility monitors (Clearblue), and taking vitamins.
But WOW!!!!!!!!!
We are moving to FL and buying a house, w/ VERY little extra $$$ left over.. and OH MY! Seeing your list really scared me!!!
As my DH says, i have a taste that doesn't match our wallets.. and oh my!!!!
Im now officially scared...
ETA. we will also need a nanny (though not a live-in one)... I wonder how much they are in Miami?

Re: I am crazy
LOL - I agree, you're crazy! Just teasing - whatever works for you! For me, I've saved enough so I don't have to work for year 1, but other than that, I haven't calculated expenses b/c I feel like I'll drive myself crazy and I know a lot of the essentials my family will get for us. As far as monthly expenses, I feel like I'll stress myself out if I try to work that all out. First thing's first for me - I need to get preggo!

Re: I am crazy
Wow, this is great! It is good to have a practical perspective on things - it helps to know that the immediate kind of costs are $4k - $6k. I'm Jewish too and won't be having a baby shower when the time comes, so its good to know what we'll need on hand - yikes!
