Can someone explain charting temps?

What does it mean? Is it your normal temp or a special thermometer? I'm trying not to get too scientific, but I am curious as to what it is. TIA!!!!

Re: Can someone explain charting temps?

a great book to get about this is "taking charge of your fertility" by toni wechsler. she gets into gory detail about temps.

some bottom lines: the two major female hormones are estrogen and progesterone. estrogen is the dominant hormone during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle (when the egg is developing, before ovulation), and progesterone is the dominant hormone after ovulation.

estrogen is a "cold" hormone and progesterone is a "hot" hormone. meaning that your basal body temperature (your temp upon waking in the morning, before any activity) is relatively low before ovulation (under the influence of estrogen) and relatively high after ovulation (under the influence of progesterone).

so by taking your basal body temp each day, you can estimate when you ovulated by changes in your temps.

there are some other details about charting temps that involve being able to tell if you're pregnant from your chart, but these chart signs of pregnancy are much less consistent. so most people use charting temps as a way to either help them get pregnant or to avoid it!

hope this helps Chat Icon

Yes, you need a special thermometer. It's called a basal thermometer. It measures your temperatures in smaller increments than a regular thermometer. I got mine at the drug store by the pg tests and ovulation kits.

Now the problem here is that different thermometers can give slightly different readings. I was going between 2 different thermometers because I travel for work and it was damned near impossible to get a good read. I finally just used one and BAM, I had MUCH more accurate readings....

Perhaps try hiding your thermometer in a bedside drawer to keep it away from the pooch.

i totally agree that using different thermometers can really mess up your chart. i'm lucky it didn't happen to me - the temps stayed the same.

i eventually learned the "hide it in the drawer" trick ... but not before i bought out every bbt at every CVS in my town Chat Icon i'm a little dense Chat Icon Chat Icon
