Moms who use powdered formula

When did you stop boiling the water used to mix the formula? Or do you continue for as long as the baby drinks it? My water gets STEAMING hot but don't know if I should still be boiling it anyway.

Re: Moms who use powdered formula

I don't know if you HAVE to use boiled water (even though the directions say you should). There are plenty of moms who mix it with bottled water. My question is whether or not I have to boil the water if I am mixing it with tap water.

If you do boil the water, let it cool to about 100 degrees (about the temperature of bath water) before mixing the powder or else it will clump too much. Also, I find that Marron does better with the gas if I mix a big container all at once (enough for the day) and then just pour it out as needed. I think it is because the bubbles have time to dissipate.

I've never boiled. We have a Brita filter sink attachment and I just mix the powder with warm Brita water. I do agree with mixing enough for the day at once. Kaylee does better with gas that way too.

Re: Moms who use powdered formula

I boiled the water till the end, but just because it was easy to do so. I don't sterilize bottles anymore, haven't in a LONG time, so it's not like I'm too worried about the water --- but we have an electric kettle so every night when she'd go to bed I'd fill it up and boil a full pot of water, then keep that out on the counter for the next day's bottles.

I'd occasionally hit the button to heat up the water a bit before giving it to her, but the formula should mix fine with room temp water too.

I boiled a pot of water and put it in a sealable pitcher. Hayley drank it at room temperature. I boiled the water until I took her off formula.

Re: Moms who use powdered formula

We've been boiling all along. I boil a tea kettle full of water once a day b/c the Dr. told us to. I use bottled water if we're out and I need to have extra supplies on hand.

Some people boil, some don't. I have well water but I also have a Culligan water system so DH didn't think I should have to boil but I did anyway because the powder mixed better. But now I use RTF so it doesn't matter.

We used boiling water initially - later when they were older (about 8 mos) we used our hot tap water.

I used boiled water until she was 4 months old, then went right to tap water. I do not use bottled water. I feel that the tap water is fine, it is regularly monitored and tested, whereas the bottled water you buy is not tested or monitored. JMO.

I never boiled, I just used filtered water from the fridge. I also didn't heat my bottles, I would fill them in the morning and serve them room temp.

Re: Moms who use powdered formula

My ped told us to boil water b/c bottled water can still contain bacteria. I boil water every night, put it in a pitcher and let it cool. My pitcher hold two days worth of water so I usually fill my bottles with water and put them in the cabinet and just dump the powder in when I'm ready.

Re: Moms who use powdered formula

We boil tap water. Just make a full kettle at night for the next day. It's easy, but lately, I've been just taking it straight from the tap if I'm in a rush.

Re: Moms who use powdered formula

I always used bottled water and warmed it with hot water until it was luke warm. I never boiled, still don't - he'll drink it cooler now but I like to make it a little warm so he doesn't get a belly ache.

If I'm out of bottles water then I will boil water the night before or in the morning and use that throughout the day but it's not hot. I've done the tap thing but because DS isn't used to the tap sometimes he'll gas or become fussy. That could be in my head of couse.
