Stopping for a school bus question
So I know if you are an the opposing side of a street or behind a school bus you are supposed to stop for if it has it's lights flashing or the stop sign out. But what if you are perpendicular at a 4 way intersection?
I wasn't sure, so I stopped just to be safe But just curious if you are required to? I tried to google the law in NYS and of course no real clarity. Just says you are required to stop behind it or on the opposing side of traffic, which I interpret as a two way street or street with divided line.

Stopping for a school bus question
I would say yes, because my children get off the bus and cross the perpendicular street to get home.

I don't know if it's the law, I'd assume so, but either way I would personally stop. Kids are most likely going to be crossing there and usually assume all cars will be stopped - which isn't right, but it happens.

I would think yes. My understanding is that the flashing red lights on the school bus stop traffic in all directions surrounding it.

Legally, you have to stop if you are going to actually pass the bus. You are not required to stop if you are going to turn away from the bus and not go past any part of it

"If the driver approaches from a perpendicular street and the path of travel does not pass the stopped bus then a motorist is clear to proceed," Brown said. "If the driver is turning toward the path of the stopped school with its red lights flashing, the driver is required to stop."
In NY State, you have to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights on a divided highway. We're one of the few states with that law.

So I'm just too tired today or my reading comprehension stinks....So if the driver is heading in a straight path North and the Bus is heading in a straight path West, does the driver stop and wait? You would be passing the bus, just from a different direction.

Legally, if you are driving at 90 degrees to the direction of the bus, you aren't approaching or passing the bus, so you could continue. Personally, I would stop and wait, since I know that kids just run off the bus in all directions and never look where they're going. I'd rather wait 30 seconds for the bus and kids to disperse.

I think most people don't realize this. I have been honked at, flashed and almost rear ended when I've stopped for a school bus on the other side of a divided highway.

Regardless of the law PLEASE stop always at a four way stop. Our kids have to cross the street and so many people just go. I can't tell you how many times they have almost been hit. Now the bus driver pulls half way into the intersection so they would have to swerve around him. That has helped.

Glad to hear it's not just me. I've seen more accidents in the 3 years I've been on LI than I did in 29 years in Queens. I see at least 2 a day.

Ok, I will.
And im usually not like this, but I'm being a bit snarky because 1) I said I did stop and I'm surprised the law doesn't require it 2) this post was written purely out of curiosity, not because I'm looking for a cover to roll through an intersecton where I know there is an extremely high probabilty some wantan kid listening to music while texting with his laces untied is going to walk into the middle of the road at any given moment or maybe a small child who is excited to see a puppy across the way is going to jet out 3) I'm a mother "our kids" are my kids, neices and nephews too and I get it and today I'm a bit tired, need another big cup of coffee, and would rather not be patronized on the Internet.

Stopping for a school bus question
It’s not just LI. It’s everywhere. I live in CT and my town is small, hilly, 2 lane Rd’s. No street lights, no sidewalks. People pass by buses all the freaking time. Luckily my daughter get dropped off at the house and on our side. But there’s plenty that Do not. The bus drivers constantly call in plate numbers. It’s insane. I know they are annoying to be around but they are kids. And I if I ever hit one by accident I would feel terrible the rest of my life.

Honestly are you kidding me??? When I said "our kids" I meant the kids at my children's bus stop. I didn't think you wanted to roll through the stop sign. Our kids all run across the street, not because they are excited to see a puppy - because they are 5 and 6 years old. And my post, while in response to your original post, was just to make people more aware of how dangerous it is to go even when you might not be required to stop. I'm really not sure wtf your problem is but you need to get a grip and chill out.
