You're not alone. I've lived here all my life and have no desire to live anywhere else. I love being close to the city, the beach, out east, etc. we have great restaurants and almost anything you could want, never far away. Yes, it's expensive and crowded, but worth it as far as I'm concerned. There are other areas of the country - other cities really (Chicago, Atlanta, San Fran area, Boston, Charlotte) - that I've been too and really liked and could see living in, but I still like LI more. And there are more rural areas I've been to that are great too, but I could never see myself living permanently in the county or more remote type area. As far as I'm concerned, anything and everything I would want is nearby, living on LI

I do too. I'm out east and I feel like it's the best of both worlds. I was kinda surprised at all the responses on the other thread.

You're not alone. I love it here. I feel like there's this cult mentality with finding it "cool" to hate the island. You hate it? Leave! Meanwhile, the extremely competitive real estate market in all parts of the island driving the prices up are proof that lots of people are here to stay.

I couldn't believe the comments. Especially the ones about the beaches. Guess they are going to the wrong ones. If I hated it here so much I would leave. Yes it's expensive here but you get so much for your money. The Summers are what I live for. Fall and spring are awesome too. I even love a little snow sometimes. Nothing like a cozy snow day. People are rude everywhere. But the majority of people are very nice. I couldn't believe how rude people in Boston were. I'll take long island driving any day to the craziness there.
I love long island and I'm so happy I get the opportunity to live here. I feel very lucky.

I have had times when I was unhappy but I'm very happy here now. Maybe it because of the town we live in. I have to say I have seen a real sense of community here. Yes there are assholes but my neighbors have been amazing.

At times I get depressed looking at what we could afford in some towns upstate when dh and I look but in reality, I don't want to go anywhere. There's so much here I enjoy, from the people, to the activities, and all the opportunities. Dh would love to get a few acres upstate with no neighbors but I want to be somewhere there are opportunities for our kids when they're out of school. We are lucky to keep our expenses low so I can stay home bc I do hate battling the crowds on weekends. I find weekdays very peaceful and if you're not rushing around people are very friendly. So I don't think LI is perfect but I doubt anywhere is and I really do enjoy it here.

Spinoff. Anyone love living on Long Island

I love it sometimes and hate it. I think a big part of it is trying to balance it all- more of a personal issue than Long Island. Since having my second, I am ready to go off the deep end- balancing work, house, life- etc it is hard. If I move, it will probably be the same thing for me. Most work days it is like this- I am running late trying to get everyone and myself together. Then I am stuck it shittty traffic and I think how much I hate this congested dirty place. But then on a good day, I appreciate everything it has to offer. So I guess it depends on the day. LOL

Re: Spinoff. Anyone love living on Long Island

I absolutely love LI. I don't particularly love December - March because I hate the cold, but April - November more than make up for it. I love that I can take a drive down Ocean Parkway and have dinner on the water on a random Friday night after work. I love that we're only 45 minutes from the wineries. I love that the schools here are really within the community - my DD's friends are within minutes driving distance (a lot of schools out of state encumber miles and miles worth of real estate and can take kids 45 min bus rides to get to school).

Thankfully we can afford to live here - it is definitely expensive and yes, we may get more for our money elsewhere, but then I wouldn't be with the people I'd want to fill my house with anyway!
We may not be able to retire here (and I'd probably want to move away from the winter), but growing up and raising my family here is absolutely what I want.

Re: Spinoff. Anyone love living on Long Island

I don't know if I "love" it, but it's home to me for a bunch of reasons and I disagree with most of the criticisms of the other thread.

I like how the climate here is very temperate. Summers never get that hot and winters usually aren't crazy cold, at least not for long stretches. I would die in most parts of the South during the summer and would be miserable any further north during the winter.

I do see more trash than I would like, but I'm not sure it's any better or worse than most places and I actually think it's gotten better over the years.

I originally wasn't crazy about my town (long story about why I am sort of tied to it) but I'm seeing a nice sense of community as my son gets older and more involved in things like sports and makes new friends.

I think people are perfectly friendly.

There are so many things to do. (I actually agree that most of the beaches are meh but I am not a beach person so that's ok with me.)

I like that there is a religious tolerance (relatively speaking) that many other parts of the country don't have. I don't want to be asked what church I go to by strangers or see anti choice billboards all over the highway like you do in much of the South.

I have no specific hate for long island except the prices of living here I just find insane! I wish there was so more control/competitions to drive prices down in utilities and our taxes are insane.

My only other big gripe is trying to get off long island and out of the city the traffic freaking sucks Chat Icon

I love it here. I also grew up in Queens (and Bklyn). So for me, it's awesome compared to those areas. I think for people who may have grown up here, they may not realize the great things about it or they have seen the decline and that's why they are unhappy.

I love living here, but do get sad at times about how much money we spend here... Now that we have a baby, I feel like I appreciate the parks, beaches, and activities LI has to offer. I feel like if I was living elsewhere, I would be so bored and wouldn't have as much to do.

The only other places I would consider moving to are CT (family has moved there), or Raleigh, NC. Unfortunately, NC doesn't pay teachers well and the areas of CT I like are pretty much the same price range as where we are now

I do!! I enjoy the beaches, love the 4 seasons, close to Manhattan. The majority of my family live here, we have excellent access to great healthcare and I am pleased with the school district we live in. I enjoy my neighbors and feel very safe.
I think life is what you make it- you're not happy here leave... I think most would be surprised no matter where they go they will always think the grass is greener.

I haven't experienced this type of cult mentality where it is "cool" to hate the island and I didn't read the other thread. Personally I'd love to love living on Long Island but I can't say the thought of moving elsewhere hasn't crossed my mind. Most complaints I've heard about the island is that is is too crowded. I think most people who don't like living here would leave if it weren't for issues like family being here and their jobs. So it's not easy to just pick up and leave even if you would rather live somewhere else.

I do.

I know its expensive; and it is. There is certainly no doubt about that. But I can't imagine living in any other state, or even Upstate for that matter.

I made my way out here from Queens.....then to Nassau.....now Suffolk.

I love vacationing elsewhere; I just can't live there. Chat Icon

I didn't grow up here, we moved here about 18 years ago when my son was a baby. I don't *love* it, but I like it for the most part. Love that we have access to the ocean...we LOVE Sailor's Haven on Fire Island. So many fun kid activities, museums, parks, a train ride to NYC. When I go visit my family in the midwest, I realize just HOW MUCH we have around here!

Spinoff. Anyone love living on Long Island

I love where I live on Long Island. We have no plans to leave. Anytime we go on vacation, we can't wait to get home to NY. The only other place we would consider moving so far would maybe be Boston. But for my DH's career, NYC is where he needs to be.

I have no issue living here. We are so close to everything...beaches, city, restaurants, shopping, airports, etc...
If we do move, it will be to NC most likely, but we are perfectly happy in our town.

Re: Spinoff. Anyone love living on Long Island

I honestly think I would enjoy it more if the weather was better.
And by better I mean, more like Florida.
Chat Icon
The beaches here cannot compare to Florida- esp the gulf coast, but they would be ok if only I could actually enjoy them for more than 2 to 2 1/2 months.
There were times this summer I'd be on the beach on a July morning- we go early- and have to wear a sweatshirt because I was cold. Umm, no.
Not in July on a beach.

I feel like yeah, we have these beaches so close, but they are untouchable for most of the year so it's a waste.

And of course it's way over crowded due to the constant building of homes, etc... which causes insane traffic.
But again I could deal with that better if I was dealing with it in a better climate.
