The only terrible mom is the one that puts others down

I chalk it up to "when you know better... you do better" You can't be terrible if your doing the best you know. When someone tells me something new, I do my own research and if it checks out, I try to do better. Shame on her for putting you down. It's one thing to try to educate people on things they might not know are dangerous but to make someone feel bad or inferior is just not right.

Re: Terrible mom??

The best way to parent is to do what works best for your family. I swore I would never cosleep but it's the only way I could get any sleep. But there is a long list of rules to follow to keep the baby safe in your bed.
As long as your baby is fed, clothed and loved it doesn't matter. I have been lectured constantly because i don't feed my children organic foods. We are gluten free because of Celiac Disease. It expensive enough feeding them I just can't afford organic too. My kids are thriving and happy and that's all that matters.
I have found the worst offenders with criticizing parenting do it because they are insecure in their own parenting skills so they feel the need to constantly tell you why what they do is best. Just ignore them and move on.

I couldn't care less what anyone does with their kid, but the AAP strongly advises against co-sleeping: https://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/pages/bed-sharing-remains-greatest-risk-factor-for-sleep-related-infant-deaths.aspx?nfstatus=401&nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&nfstatusdescription=ERROR:+No+local+token

We all grew up with Gerber and J&J and we all turned out just fine- better than fine, actually, given that 90% of LIF members were in gifted programs as children.

You're doing a great job mommy, and don't let this nut make you feel otherwise!

Here's a piece of advice that you totally didn't ask for, but like that jackass at the party, I'm going to give to you anyway ..........

YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. - You know what feels right to you. And if you don't, I'm SURE you have people you trust to ask questions and get advice from. (and if you don't, just caome here, we are MORE than happy to give our $0.02)

DO NOT, EVER let anyone let you think you're a bad mother because of the products you do or don't use, the food you do or do not feed your children, the clothes, shoes, activities, amount of time you spend with them etc etc etc ..........

Are they bathed? Are they fed? Do they have a place to sleep? Are they taken care of? Are they happy? Do you LOVE them? Guess what? You're a good mother. End of Story.

ANYONE who tells you differently is a self rightous, self important moron.

Chat Icon and I adore you MarisaK.

All of this, exactly.

I had the same question when I read this thread. I tried looking it up and found that some of the products had toxic chemicals in them like formaldehyde. They were a byproduct of something else. (J&J wasn't putting them in intentionally)

J&J has since changed their formula.

There is a belief that ingredients have been linked to cancer. I didn't use but I never personally validated this as true or not. Just answering your question. I love burts bees but use copper tone and other brand name stuff.

What's wrong with gerber? They did poison my son with recalled pouches but that could be any brand.....

Agree with all previous. if this person was rude and judge mental than that's her problem. Try not to let it upset you.

Ahhhh....I love a good sanctimommy story. Don't worry about anything she says. Wait and see the end results of her awesome parenting. Guaranteed her kid is the one none of the other kids want to play with on the playground because he/she is an a-hole just like their mother. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about the choices you make for your child. We are all just doing the best we can.

Terrible mom??

My belief is you do the best you can until you know better--and even then sometimes as a parent you have to just make your own choices and be comfortable with them--do your own research- a lot of our bath products and lotions have potentially harmful ingredients in them- the Environmental working group has rating and explanations if you want to take a look.
There is always someone that is going to critique or critize--I usually thank the person and look up my own information--sometimes in the end I agree and other times I get a good laugh.

Uuuuugggghhhhh hate judge-y moms! We are in this together! To each their own! I'm sure if you spent a day with her, watching how she parents, you'd be able to see things that you don't agree with either. Everyone needs to make their own choices for their own families! MYOB as my 8 year old son would say lol. No worries! Chat Icon

ETA that I used J & J when the kids were little and had no idea about all the hoopla. Now after reading up on it I try not to use it but have in a pinch. MANY of US were raised being bathed and powdered in nothing but J & J. It's all good!

Re: Terrible mom??

People suck. But you can see from the thread that everyone has their own way of doing things.

My SIL wont put a crib against the wall. People said she was weird for having it in the middle of the room, but most dont know the story that her cousins daughter got caught between the wall and crib when she was crawling out and passed away.

I have a dozen friends that wont cosleep, we had a friend who did with all her kids and her third child she accidentally rolled over a bit too much and she suffocated the baby and he passed away. But I have another six friends who know the same friend and still feel comfortable cosleeping.

That mom sounds like an idiot. And telling any mom they should co-sleep is ignorant. Very few people cosleep correctly with newborns and it is the cause of numerous infants deaths per year in NYS. So much so that they initiated a whole Babies Sleep Safest Alone campaign. I am not trying to judge any mother that does it as I did it myself at times, but you should do research on safe ways to cosleep before you do it and you certainly shouldn't try to shame someone into cosleeping when that person may not be aware of safe vs. unsafe ways to cosleep.

I want you to understand something.

And I have not read ANY of the other comments, but I'm betting they will be the same.

That mom is an A$$hole!!!!!

Who the hell does she THINK she is because she moms one way????????

Are your kids happy? Healthy? Do they smile when you look at them? Do like spending time with you? Are they kind?

Then you ARE doing a great job and that mom can go F herself.

Don't judge yourself by OTHER people's standards. And for her to judge you is just a nasty thing.

You are doing a great job and don't let ANYONE tell you otherwise.

Terrible mom??

There are always going be "that" mom who thinks they do things the best. I just nod my head and let them talk. I don't give two craps about what anyone else does and every single family is different. Unfortunately "that" mom shows up all through the kids growing up so if your child is happy and healthy be confident in your own choices : ). You're a great mom!!

She would have left with her tail between her legs had she pulled that shitt with me. I would have cursed her out so badly it would make feeding Gerber and using J&J products seem like nothing in the realm of bad momdom!

Piece of advice. ..assholes like that prey on people they think they can get away with saying shitt like that to. Stand up for yourself. And always, always OWN your parenting decisions. Never ever feel the need to make excuses or let ANYONE make you feel like a bad mom.

You're right-part of the reason I'm still bothered by this is because I am mad at myself for not standing up for myself. I always think of what I could have/should have said after the fact to know it all types of people, but when I'm in the moment, I just can't think that fast of a response that would put someone like this in his/her place. I need more of a backbone. Honestly, reading most of the responses on here has made me feel a lot better, so thank you for all of the supportive feedbackChat Icon

Agree with this 100%! I remember when ds1 was around 7 months and all of a sudden, I started noticing red spots throughout his face and body, they weren't hives, and he didn't seem in pain, there were just red patches that would go away within hrs, I kept trying to figure out what it was, maybe avocado, maybe tomatoes, maybe oranges?!? I kept elimininating different stuff until a mom had suggested it might have been the J&J shampoo I was using, I made some research and found out that in some of their products there are stuff that mechanics use to clean their floors (don't remember the actual name cause this was more than 3 yrs ago!). I stopped using it, and without exaggeration, I noticed a difference immediately. I kept beating myself because I couldn't figure out what was causing it but if this mom didn't mention anything, I'd have probably never figure out the shampoo was causing it. I'm all for welcoming suggestions because it's impossible to know everything but another thing completely different is making others feel inferior or pushing ur believes on others, big no-no in my book! When I get advises, even with the ones I didn't ask for, I say thank u, do my own research and then decide if it's something that's worth apply to my family.

The fact that u're doing the best for ur family should be what's important to u, don't let others put u down under any circumstance.
