This is terrible. Feel so bad for you!!! I don't think you can be too paranoid, don't blame you.
What I will tell you is that I check every single room we stay in from the second we walk in the hotel room door. We put our luggage and all our stuff in the bathroom (least likely place for bedbugs). I always bring a flashlight with me and I check behind beds, in drawers, on the mattress under the sheets, in outlets, couches, etc.
Once I see nothing, I feel better and safer. But I always keep luggage and clothing OFF the bed. Never in the drawers. Preferably keep the luggage in the bathroom and always keep it zipped! I keep shoes, etc, away from the bed. Bedbugs like to live by the bed so keep these things away.
I watched youtube videos on how to check your room and this is what I do every time, to avoid being in a situation such as you are in unfortunately. I am so sorry! Esp if you hate to travel to begin with, so so upsetting!!!

Our entire family were in 3 different suits in building 11. At least 2 of the suits had bedbugs. So i'm pretty sure all suits in that building have them. We were then moved to building 5 but dh found a bedbug in that room after doimg a thorough check before we all went in there. We then were moved to building 7 which seemed to be fine but who knkws for sure. Just to be clear, it was vistana villages resort villas and not vistana resort villas.

Thanks! We did everything we could to make sure they did not make their way home with us! I'd rather do too much than not enough. We are going to go out and buy hardshell suitcases now! We do always keep our luggage in suitcases in the kitchen area. And we did have our clothes in space saver bags to begin with. But after we wore something and washed it I put it right back in those same bags. So we bought the huge ziploc bags and re washed and dried our clothes on the highest heat and repacked everything. I literally too the clothes 1 by 1 and folded each piece and put it right into the bags. And what we dis when we got home, im confident we did not bring anything home. This is the reason i hate to travel. Not only am i afraid to fly but bedbugs is one of my biggest fears in hotels. If and when we do this again, because I would love to take my kids back to disney, i'm definitely going to bring a flashlight and check the room thoroughly like you stated.

What I also do is bring a large clear plastic garbage bag or two. I put all dirty clothes in there on the trip, keep in bathroom and keep it TIED up. Only untie to add more dirty clothes. When we come home all clean clothes not worn go in drier for about 10 minutes. All dirty clothes get washed and dried. And luggage does NOT get placed on our beds, we empty stuff out in our kitchen not the bedrooms. I then check the luggage again outside in the light for any thing that could be in but would be VERY unlikely after all the precautionary steps we have taken.

We do something similar. Hard case suitcases go direct to the basement and everything, worn or not goes into the washer immediately. Then we leave the suitcases down there until our next trip. That way the only thing that could possibly be infected would be the trunk of the car.
We started this after returning from Niagara Falls and we brought the soft luggage into the bedroom and I found a bug on the outside of the luggage. I don't know if it was a bed bug or not, but it was enough for us to get a 'protocol' in place.

I now check the bedbugregistry.com site before booking a hotel. I try to pick one without any reports. Although we still check when we get there. Im not sure of the exact address you stayed at, but it looks like there are reports at that resort you stayed at. Maybe add your report to that as well.

I saw this the other day. I tried to add my report but it wasn't working. I have to set up my laptop later and try from there instead of my phone. I am definitely going to add it though!

Re: And this is why i skeeve hotels and we never go away....ever!! Update at bottom!
I haven't read all the comments so I'm sorry if this was already said-- but a bedbug infestation would not be limited to one room. The entire hotel is likely infested. Definitely check out of their ASAP if you want to be super safe. I'd also check the seams of your suitcase VERY carefully, and leave them in the bathtub until checkout. It's less likely (not impossible-- just less likely) that bed bugs will find their way to them that way.
My dh and I experienced bed bugs in our first apartment in Brooklyn almost 10 years ago. It was terrible. The infestation was so bad. It caused us no option but to move in with my parents for three months till we found another place to live. We had a lot of unfinished wood in the apartment and the bed bugs lived in all the crevices. Even with the exterminator coming in TWICE to fumigate, we still had them. We ended up having to toss furniture and it cost us thousands of dollars in things we had to replace, and clothing that needed to get professionally laundered. Bed bugs are no joke.

Bedbugs are everywhere. Had friends get bitten at the movie theater. They are on the trains, subways, buses. They can be in department stores. They come in on people and are hard to get rid of. I have stayed in places where others have had issues with them and thankfully we never had an issue. We had a spider issue at one place. And yes, I never went back there! Good luck with everything.
