Lottery spinoff

If you won a big jackpot, say 100 million, how much would you donate to charity, or would you... and which charities?

Re: Lottery spinoff

I would donate a lot of money to First Descents. Not sure how much exactly but a substantial amount for sure.

They provide all-expense-paid adventure trips to young adult cancer survivors and patients. I went kayaking in Montana last summer with them and it was life-changing. It was one of the best experiences I ever had.

Edit - also Farm Sanctuary. Love love love them.

Re: Lottery spinoff

i know DH would give a large gift to his school.

i would be practical about it and do a smaller amount each year, picking a different charity each time. i'd pick an area I wanted to help out for the year and then have DH find the best charity to donate to based on the amount actually going to help the cause vs. admin costs.

Re: Lottery spinoff

It's strange but I've thought about this

And this is the kind of charity I would do

I would just go up to randoms houses and pay off the mortgage

Go to colleges and pay off 4 years

Things like that

Find the mom working two jobs and say here is you're next job. Sitting on our butt and doing nothing!

I would rather spend 50 million Doing that than write a check to a charity

If I won an obscene amount, I would quit my job and volunteer to plan charity events. I'm not sure which charity I would be involved in (possibly food allergy research since my son has nut allergies), but I'd want to do a lot of research so it's not something that pays it's CEOs a huge chunk of their revenue like Susan Komen Foundation (pink ribbon breast cancer).

I'd give to the Ronald McDonald family room at Stonybrook.

I also like gina's idea. I'd go to toys r us and pay off the layaways around Christmas time.

I recently went to the children's museum in Bridgehampton and I'd want to open something similar in Western Suffolk.

I'm on the same page as a pp, I'd directly help individuals rather than formal charities. I'd probably give a significant amount to pediatric rare cancer research as well. And maybe start my own charity. I'd love to focus on affordable childcare for duel income families (not the super rich but middle class where you don't qualify for assistance programs but daycare is still a stretch). It's unfortunate that some women have to leave the workforce and a job they are passionate about bc the cost of daycare nearly wipes out thier paycheck.

Yes, I would give toward causes special to me. I don't know about organizations but I would be interested in setting up funds/scholarship for different therapies that parents with special needs children could not afford (ex- music therapy). Also the widows & children fund.

Boots on the ground and animal charities, smaller ones that make a difference but don't have a large donation base. I'd also like to start some type of animal coalition where neutering and spaying is free to every animal in the state. This would tremendously help animal charities that try and prevent tons of unwanted animals being born.

Re: Lottery spinoff

DH and I have always said that if we won a big one like that... after taxes - what ever the amount was that 1/2 would get donated to charities. Mostly animal rescue/shelters and cancer charities.

This is a great question. I'm not a big spender so I'd like to think we'd have plenty to donate.

I would consider a bunch

Lupus foundation of America
March of dimes
Ronald McDonald house
St. Judes
Muscular dystrophy association
American brain tumor association
Now I lay me down to sleep

ACLD, EJ Autism Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Birthday Wishes, Ashley Wade Foundation, St. Jude...I'm sure there's a few local charities I would donate to as well.

I also love the idea of paying off layaways anonymously.

My church and some other religious organizations.

Our alma maters.

Marine and military causes.

I also love Gina's idea of randomly paying off mortgages and education for others.

Re: Lottery spinoff

I would create my own trust so that I could give to institutions that I like. For me I would want to give to local charities that I know have low overhead and do a lot with the money raised, rather than big organizations that I think profit off of the donations for their own bloated self interests.

Re: Lottery spinoff

Definitely give to a few "go fund me" pages for people I know experiencing hardship.
I would also give some money to the cystic fibrosis foundation. I lost a wonderful friend to CF when I was in middle school.
I'd also likely give to some animal shelters, and probably St. Jude or a children's hospital.
I like to give anyway back now and try to give when I can. I always wish I could do more and would if I could.

I've always said I would give half, I'm sure there is a way it would need to be done.
I would give a lot to St Jude's and the rest to animal charities.
